Request for Aheria. She asked someone to paint her maned wolf fursona in more gothicy, sexy style than she was usually depicted. The original is acrylics on vellum finish bristol. for some reason the yellow scanned in very ....electric. I toned it down a little in fireworks (and reduced the image to about half the size of the original), but the yellows all came up much more vehement than in the original, where the yellow on the chest and face was just very slight tinting. \r\nA pox upon ye, foul scanner, I shall defeat ye yet!

Acrylics on Vellum finish Bristol. Original is 11X14. Done for the March 2003 VCL compo.\r\n\r\nIt's Allah portrayed as a salukhi. Why? All dogs are considered unclean under Islam...except the salukhi, which is considered a sacred gift from Allah. It has to do with the way they hunt. saluhki will stun small prey, or hold larger prey at bay until the hunter comes so that it can be ritually butchered. Animals killed by dogs are considered tainted meat. a dog that will bring you live prey that can be correctly killed is therefore a valuable possession. (in medieval times salukhi could not be bought or sold, only given as gifts, they were priceless)\r\nIslam roughly translates as 'submission to god'. Therefore the other dog, a pariah type dog considered 'unclean', is shown kneeling and ashamed, having wounded his god. \r\nAllah is shown with a book, a sword, and an astrolabe (as one of the greatest achievment of islamic science), as he is a warrior and scholar among other things.\r\nThe text is a very badly copied verse from the Koran. Surah III, Verse 135 and 136, which deals with forgiveness. (I can't actually write Arabic, so make no claim that my copy job produced anything truly legible).

replacement art for Baptism of Fire for the Rage CCG.\r\n\r\nI thought about going with the actual fire angle for this to better match name, but source material, despite the name, involves no fire. Go fig. I could have gone with much more involved scene, but the final size this will actual be used at it is about 2 inches. Cool as full body dunking would be, it would be hard to recognize that small. That its going on a tiny collectable card game card is also why its such a funny shape.\r\n\r\nAcrylic on vellum finish Bristol. 12 inches high, by 4.5 inches wide. Acrylics on vellum finish Bristol. originally 11" X 14". Scanned in two parts and stitched together in Macromedia Fireworks.\r\n\r\nSince I've been doing a lot of paintings recently I decided I might want to learn how to do something other than paint characters on abstract blotchy backgrounds or floating in the white void. So I got a book on painting landscapes. (Acrylics: Master translucent techniques for landscape painting by R. Bradford Johnson)\r\nI was intending on just dutifully following lesson plan, but the bear with fishing pole just sort of moseyed on in to the middle of the painting while I was doing the initial sketch. He fit, so he stayed.\r\nI need to work on the stippling technique, foliage did not come out as I would have liked. The grass and the tree trunks came out pretty well, and I'm happy with the bear. The yellow spots were originally, according to lesson plan, supposed to end up as flowers, but I mucked up early on with the spattering and they looked more like drifting cottonwood fluffies, so I went with that instead. If you've lived near somewhere with cottonwood trees, you know the fluffies I mean, and they end up glowy yellow in the sun, instead of white.

Corporate Downsizing\r\nAcrylic on 11X14 vellum finish bristol. Linework was inked before painting, then touched up in a few places afterward.\r\n\r\nAlas poor Bob... I wonder who'll get his cubicle?\r\n\r\nWhen your company includes werewolves, termination of employment tends to be rather quick and bloody. Bob's hand's still on the table in a puddle of blood and it's on with business as usual already.\r\n\r\nI really like the two werewolves, and the dude that looks like Ed McMahon in the background. He looks EVIL. I like the arm with the hand resting on the guy's shoulder a lot. I like the left werewolf's pants and well defined six pack a lot. His goggles don't look as cool painted as they did in the original sketch, but oh well.

A dhole hunter and her pack pony pause for a drink while trekking through a bamboo forest.\r\n\r\nMy first attempt at inking a sketch and then painting it. I like it! painting was done in acrylics watered down to behave like watercolors. The original line work can be seen in my sketches directory.\r\n\r\nI am most happy with the water effect. It even came out looking like it has a disrupted reflection of the horse in it and that the horse has its muzzle IN the water. The water is AWESOME. \r\n\r\nI am not totally happy with the grass and the horse's hocks. They didn't quite come out the way I had planned. However, I consider this a good first attempt at this technique.

In modern pop culture, the Doppleganger is generally anybody who looks similar to someone else, like the twin they never had. In older folklore, a Doppleganger is a sort of darker spirit self that attaches itself to people, whispering advice and encouragement. Though not usually the good sort.\r\n\r\nI really like the rocks in the background and the sense of motion. The werewolf looks a bit blank, but since it's effectively breathing out its soul, um, vapid is kind of to be expected. I also like that the bottom of the spirits transparent so you can see the other half of the werewolf's face through the bottom. \r\n\r\nOriginal is acrylic on vellum finish bristol. 4.5 X 14 inches. This was done in college some time, probably '98 or '99 and was the first time I had painted for at least 10 years. or at least painted on a FLAT surface. I took up painting miniatures in college. The techniques for that don't always translate so well. Done with acrylic on card stock. The glyphs were done with a mechanical pencil.\r\nMyself as a Garou. This was plated at a Rage card at one point, with my nifty stats, but it's sine wandered off. For those into that, I was a Homid Ragabash Fianna (yes, named Fenris). \r\nRage and associated terms are copyright White Wolf Game Studios.

The obligatory sexy fox girl, though she's a little off the normal pattern since the coat pattern is taken from an American grey fox, rather than the red that most people use. Her positioning is based on a pose found in DeBeers diamond ad. \r\nThis is the first painting I have done in years, and I never took any courses in it either. Yeah, its got some flaws (eyes, evil, evil eyes...), but I am otherwise very pleased with a first attempt.\r\nI do do some "painting" normally, but I paint sculptures, not on paper! Painting a three dimensional object is a whole different ball of wax. But I brought some of those techniques to bear on this.\r\nThe different textures of the fur and the clash were largely done by combining paint rubbing, dry brushing, and various washes. Its all done in arcylic paint, despite looking like water color in some places.\r\nI've particuarly happy with her wrap, which was done by laying down dark grey, light grey, and black stripes with a very dry brush, then doing a wash in a midnight blue over it. Then I added some little highlights here and there with a dry brush and some grey-blue (same color as her fur) which is how I ended up with that faint hint that she has breasts, without being overstated.\r\nI'm also really happy with the reddish coloring on her chest.\r\nArtwork copyright H.C. O'Neill 2002.

Image: glass.JPG
565x508 111802 bytes 2002.01.23
werewolf on glass. \r\n\r\nThis piece is a bit weird. The reason for the odd shape is its on a glass shard. \r\nThis image was done by sketching out the rough outline of the werewolf and laying a plate of glass\r\nover it. I then painted directly onto the glass with acrylics using only six colors, though it appears\r\nI used a lot more. \r\nI then flipped the piece over and did a very light painting over the top of the werewolf (but went\r\nheavy on the eyes and teeth, thus why they stand out) to give it a soft furry look and a bit of a\r\nmotion blur. It gave it some additional depth too. \r\n\r\nThe scanner absolutely hated this piece. Two layers of paint, one of which was semi-translucent,\r\nwas giving it conniptions. It came out rather darker than it is in person, despite my twidling with\r\nthe controls. It also has a bit more depth to it in person because the eye doesn't flatten out the\r\ntwo layers as much. Ah well.\r\n\r\nThere's a crack across the bottom that looks a bit off, but that was in the glass shard when I started.\r\n\r\nFor an experimental piece, I'm fairly happy.

A hyena gazes at the setting sun, a rose clutched in one hand and the other raised before her. Dreaming of a lover who shall soon return, bidding goodbye to one, or merely remembering someone who has passed to the far shores?\r\n\r\nAcrylic on vellum finish bristol. original is 9X12 inches. The water effect was done in many, many thin washes and with a lot of smudging, as was the sky. Much liquid frisket was used to seperate the figure from the background.\r\n\r\nStrangely I think the 'background' came out better than the actual figure. I did a hyena with rose picture many moon ago, was dissatisfied with it, and swore I would return to the combo later. I think this came out relatively well.

I am really happy with three of the hands in this picture, not so happy with the fourth. I drew it with five fingers. Yet somehow in the painting, a finger got lost. Water horses are common in Celtic and Scandinavian mythology. These malicious beasts appear as beautiful and exotic horses... but if you try and ride them they'll drag them beneath the water and devour you slowly. A revisting of an old subject. Replacement art for Lodge of the Silver Record for the the Rage CCG.\r\n\r\nI'm going back and remastering the online releases for the Rage CCG. Mostly it's to improve the image quality in the download, but there's also some cards that need a text correction. it's been a few years now. reupload after a visit to the structured critique forum. Thanks guys! The werewolf's muzzle was shortened slightly, the shadows were made darker, and the shadows in the doorway were made lighter by applying a thin white wash.\r\n\r\nAcrylic on vellum finish bristol. Background was done with a wash and blotting while it was wet.\r\n\r\nThe funny shape is because this artwork was done for the Rage collectable card game, which have long narrow art boxes on some cards. King Albrecht wants YOU! Pose based on the famous 1916 painting of Uncle Sam by James Montgomery Flagg.\r\n\r\nI have all new respect for anyone who's ever painted a character with white fur. King Al here was done by underpainting in an ivory wash, then adding texture with white tinted with some purple. Finer details were then added in titanium white and in a pale grey. I'm pleased with the fact that he looks furry, it was difficult to get.
