In the fall, Speaks right foot pulled free from the base. Not that you can see that in this photo. You;d never be able to tell now that it has ever been damaged.

This shows off Speaks marking very well. The description I was given said he was grey and silver and had markings somewhere in between those of a lynx and a wolf. Mostly I took lynx as the key colors, and did wolfish markings. The base coat was white across feet and belly, then antique white, then several shades of grey, and fianlly black brushing across the spine, tail tip and in crosses across the back, hips, and shoulders. The darker sections were dry bushes over the edge into lighter ones to give a transition between the colors instead of distinct markings. The whole thing was heavily washed in black to add depth and make him look a bit dirty and travelworn, then dry brushed in white and silver to give him some extra shine.

In this overhead view you can see the spirits outstretched hand really well, pointing at some distant objective, Speaks' head just turning to look. In other angles you can see his forefeet and legs are positioned to incidate he's just start to change direction.
The hand's a lot less delicate in reality than it appears! There's a "skeleton" of 20 gauge steel wire supporting those fingers. Speaks actually took a tumble off a shelf while I was painting him, crash, under a slate floor. With no damage to the actual sculpture itself. There's a picture in my sketches directory showing the actual damage.

The winner requesting Speaks be shown on Hispo, a sort of giant wolf form, rather than the standard Crinos, manwolf form most of my sculptures are done in. He's also got a more realistic paint job than many other characters. There's about five basic colors making up his fur, two highlighting colors, and a black wash. The spirit's got about four colors, one highlight color and a black wash. The wolf was standard brush work, but the spirits mottled swirling pattern was done by fingerpainting. Yes, fingerpainting. it gave it a nice mottled, swirled pattern that way.

I love the cloth wrapped around the sword, especially where one of Azhar's claws is pokign through a hole torn in the cloth. Its a lovely detail that turned out real well.

What's up with the sword? Azhar doesn't carry it around in the Rage storyline, doesn't dress like this normally, and isn't much for combat. This is basically depicting an incident from the past at his home sept, before he came to visit the US and got involved in the current storyline. Hopefully I'll get more into Azhar's background in one of the upcoming storyline segments. And into Lone Wolf Circle's background as well.

Azhar Serpent-Slayer was offered as a the prize for the Rage: Apocalypse tournament at Origins 2002. Azhar is a Theurge Silver Fang of House Wiseheart. He's visiting the States from Israel. At the time the storyline was being written, the current Palestinian-Israeli conflict hadn't flared up, otherwise an Israeli Fang probably wouldn't have been included.
Due to Azhar's background, I breifly toyed with painting the cloth wrapping the sword as either a prayer shawl or a keffiyeh (the checked thing the Palestinians wear) or doing two wraps, one of each, but finally decided someone would take it badly, and just painted it this greyish blue.

The actual title etched on the underside of the base says "Azhar Serpent Slayer of the Sept of the Shattered Stone Spring". None of the pictures turned out showing off the spring well. You can see some high shine off some of the rocks from the angle, but not well. There's actually a water effect, with the water bubbling up out of what appeares to be a metorite amidst a pile of broken stones. Thus the shattered stone spring.

His tail looks really odd in this picture because of the angle it was taken at. The blood splattered by his foot and leg is supposed to be his own. He has a wound on the chest, so the irregular splotches goy applied to the ground to indicate he'd just walked from somewhere else, leaving the blood trail.

Azhar was done by applying Apoxie Sculpt over a foam and wire armiture. The base is a foam base with a veneer of Apoxie Sculpt over it that had natural stone and sand pressed into it while wet. He was painted in acrylics. The water effect was done with clear Elmer's School Glue gel.

Wrestles-the-Shadow, Uktena werewolf, has a grand old time battling some banes. Left side, overhead shot.
From this particular angle, he seems to be taking great joy in this whole endeavor. The thing I love most about this sculpture is how different his facial expression appears from different angles.
The sand base, since there's a good view of that in this shot, was done by pressing sand into the Apxie sculpt on the base before it set. This didn't make it sufficiently 'sandy' in some places, so I went back over it with elmer's school glue gel that had some tan acrylic mixed into it, and applied more sand. that's why some portions of the base are darker than others.

Wrestles-the-Shadow, Uktena werewolf, battles come Banes, view of left side.
His expression isn't visible in this shot, but it does clearly show the positioning of the two spirits, and where his hands are in relation. The right claws at the one coming out of his chest. The left ineffectively grasps at the other Bane as it slips between his claws.
The laid back position was to emphasize the struggle with the thing passing through him. Before the arms and head were done, he rather looked like he was doing the limbo. His back probably should have been more heavily arched.

Wrestles-the-Shadow, Uktena werewolf, nose to nose with an evil Bane. View of the right back.
There's two banes, but only half of each one is visible in the picture. The one emergign from his chest is the one by his nose, the one in his left hand, that's the tail of the on coiled round his leg.
The black eedging around the eye really sets off the expression so he looks quite uncertain about what's going on from this angle.

From this particular angle, that Bane coming up between his legs could be interpretted very badly. There is space between it and his crotch, it's just not showing up clearly in the photo. it's actually wrapped around his leg, with the tail end back by his tail.

Wrestles-the-Shadow, Uktena werewolf, battles some Banes.
the description I was giving of Wrestles was kind of vague, appearance-wise. I was told grey with some brown mixed in, and let he was a mic of Bonegnawer, Silent Strider, and Uktena heritage. So he's got a patchy appearance to his coat. Grey base, black blothing with brown highlights. The eye patch wasn't specified, but just happened somewhat accidentally during painting and really set off his expression well. On the left side of his face, he appears to have a bit of a manic grin, which is set off by that jaunty eye patch. On the right side however he looks far less certain about what's going on.
I'd be worried too if there was an evil spirit emerging from my heart.

Flatline the Shadow Lord werewolf- overhead view.
This picture came out a bit more heavily shadowed than I intended, so you can't quite see the stock for the rifle clearly and the fact that he's carving a notches into it, per the Wild West cliche of putting them in for the kill. Amusingly enough, the person this was modeled on, after racking up many tournament victories, failed to win at the tournament Flatline was offered at (the Helsinki Spring Equinox brawl).
Oddly, he was slightly damaged in shipping, but it was the very meaty hand holding the rifle that developed a crack fault rather than the much more delicate outstrretched finger on the other hand or his ears. From the description I got of the damage (which was repaired neatly by the tournament director so it ended up invisible), it sounded like the crack fault occured at a spot where there was a join in the underlying armature. The other seemingly weak points, the outstretched claw and the ears, are heavily reinforced with steel wire, so cracks are hard to make. The crack fault on the other hand occured at the wrist, where there's an armature join. I think I may start having to solder the join points instead of leaving flex points.

Flatline the Shadow Lord werewolf- front view, looking up
It's not clear in the picture, but he does have twotoned irises, not just simple black and white eyes. I went a lot heavier outlining the eye and lids on this one than I had previously, and it really makes them jump out in this piece. Ths same goes for the lips as I did I left larger portion of the smooth part of the lips exposed in his. You can't really see the flash of teeth from this angle, but I was extremely pleased with how the expression came out overall.

Flatline the Shadow Lord werewolf- kind of front and left hand view. The reason thing look a little off kilter in this picture is because Flatline in actually laying on his back and side in this picture so I could get a shot from in front and below, which wasn't happenin with him sitting on the rock normally.
The picture is oddly tinted because of adjustments in photoshop to lighten it. The rife stock came out a lovely dark and light marbled color once I was done painting it, like real wood. I was very pleased with it and the leather bandalero he's staoring his shells in. The pendant has the glyph for 'raven' on it, from Werewolf: the Apocalypse, put it's so small the detail wasn't showing up in the photograph.

Flatline the werewolf sitting on a rock- back view.
That's a genuine Connecticut rock he's sitting on there. The trick with using actual stone as part of a sculpture is finding one with sufficiently small crystals and grains that it doesn't look out of proportion. Since the whole sculpture is less than a foot tall (less than 30CM for you metric types), you need to be careful that the crystals be in proportion to the actual sculpture. Since this is Werewolf: the Apocalypse style werewolf, he'd be roughly 9 feet tall in Crinos, so imagine the crystals in the rock, nine times the size they appear here. And you thought picking the right rock was easy!

Happy news, Finnish customs listened to reason and released the statue to the tournament director, no problem, once he actually showed up to claim it. (though they must have been terribly surprised to find a werewolf in a box).
This is a view from the left side. There's a greenish tint to the picture due to my terribly photography skills. He's actually a slatey grey, was highlighted in a pale brownish grey and washed in black.

Flatline the Shadow Lord, sideview. The photo is a bit blurry, but this is primarily to show the positioning.
As with previous statues, this was done as a wire and styrofoam armature with a layer of Apoxie Sculpt over the top, which was how all the detailing was done.
The base is native Connecticut stone, which necessitated actually signing the pieces with a sharpie marker, instead of carving the signtaure into the base as I normally do.

This sculpture went to a Rage: Tribal War tournament in Helsinki, Finland (hopefully. At the time I'm writing this description, it was stuck in Finnish customs because it was "suspicious")
The subject matter was chosen by the previous tournament winner, a fellow by the name of Samuli, who's won several of the Finnish tournaments, thus the werewolf in the sculpture is carving another notch into his rifle stock. He gave me a very vague description of a Shadow Lord character he wanted done, but left me lots of leeway. As Tribal War has a Wild West theme, we went for the bandito kind of style here.
