Real Men Wear Phallocrypts- detail
And what, pray tell, is a phallocrypt anyway? They're decorated penis sheaths worn in traditional cultures in the tropics. New Guinea is the big place to go for phallocrypts since they're still considered everyday wear. \r\n\r\nDetail from a sculpture on a feral dog in a phallocrypt. See gallery for full body view. \r\n\r\nApoxieSculpt painted in acrylic.

What if Nipper, the dog made famous in RCA Victor ads, had an anthro equivalent in the modern era? Why he'd be listening to his ipod while reviewing his history lesson. hey, that dog with the gramophone looks kind of familiar...\r\n\r\niNipper is ApoxieSculpt, painted with acrylic. He's roughly 8 inches long. The ipod is smaller than the nail on my pinky.\r\nOriginal for sale through my website:\r\nhttp://www.rainydaypaperback.com/artindex.html

Nipper listens to his ipod while reviewing some history...\r\n\r\nPossibly the most time consuming part of painting this sculpture was reproducing "His Master's Voice" in Nipper's book. While not a perfect hair-by-hair copy, the painting is well enough known to be recognizable even when simplified and reproduced at less than an inch square.\r\n\r\nAnd no, your eyes do not deceive you, Nipper even has belt loops! and seams on his clothing!\r\n\r\niNipper is made out of ApoxieSculpt and painted in acrylic. He is roughly 8 inches long. He is available for purchase through my website.\r\nhttp://www.rainydaypaperback.com/artindex.html

Did I just hear something on my ipod? could that be my master's voice?\r\n\r\nDetail shot of the miniature reproduction of Francis Barraud's "His Master's Voice." The painting was reproduced on RCA Victor record labels for years and Nipper is still sometimes used in RCA advertising. \r\n\r\niNipper's book is rough 1 by 1.5 inches. His ipod is less than a half inch long! Yes, those really are seams sculpted onto his clothes.\r\n\r\niNipper is made out of ApoxieSculpt and painted in acrylic. He is roughly 8 inches long. Nipper listens to his ipod while reviewing some history...\r\n\r\nThe texture on Nipper's pants in a combination of sculpting and dry brushing. His pants were painted a deep blue as a base coat. They were then heavily drybrushed in a very pale brown and smudged to give the pants the appearance of battered blue jeans.\r\n\r\niNipper is ApoxieSculpt painted in acrylic. he's roughly 8 inches long.\r\nOriginal available for sale through my website:\r\nhttp://www.rainydaypaperback.com/artindex.html

Back view of sculpture featuring some boars in ceremonial costumes. \r\n\r\nThe grass skirt was done with the aid of a clay gun to produce all the thin little strands, which were then applied in little clumps. The feathers were all individually sculpted and then attached to the wrap. The wrap is intended to look like its flat shell made into a cloak. I'm not sure it is recognizable that's the effect I was trying for, but it still looks interesting.\r\n\r\nthe headdress was more fun with the clay gun.\r\n\r\nSculpture is done in ApoxieSculpt and painted in acrylic with natural sand on the base. The shine on the shell decorations, eyes, and snouts was done with clear glue.\r\n\r\nSculpture available for sale through my website. http://www.rainydaypaperback.com/artindex.html

A boar helps a younger warrior paint his face for a festival.\r\n\r\nThe costumes and the face paint are based on traditional new guinea ceremonial garb, which tends to be very eclectic and very, very bright. The face paint seems really, really gaudy, but this is not all that outrageous! Face painting is usually done in extremely pure, primary colors. Yellow is a more common base, but I find several variations on the red, white and, blue motif. \r\n\r\nI really like how the eyes turned out in this one. They are simply painted, not glass! The high shine on them comes from several coatings of glue. \r\n\r\nSculpture is done in ApoxieSculpt and painted in acrylic with natural sand on the base. Two boars prepare for a moka festival, including adding some face paint to go with their costumes.\r\n\r\nThe title is based on a video I was forced to watch many, many, many times in Anthropology, Ongka's Big Moka. Which is about Ongka walking around New Guinea trying to get people to give him pigs to give away at a large festival known as a moka. It's sort of similar to potlatch. The primary reason for moka, gather some pigs, give them away to other people. Oh yeah, and EAT THEM! \r\n\r\nThe hair texture on the boars is a mix of sculpted in texture and sneaky paint tricks. The sculpted texture was done with a toothbrush. It was enhanced with several different layers of paint to give it depth.\r\n\r\nSculpture available for sale through my website:\r\nhttp://www.rainydaypaperback.com/artindex.html

Two boar's prepare for a festival, with the older boar painting the younger warrior's face for him.\r\n\r\nCostumes are based on traditional festival garb from Papua New Guinea, though a bit more subdued than what you'd find at festivals these days. The title for the piece comes from a video (onka's Big Moka) I was forced to watch over and over and over while getting my anthropology degree. I think they made you watch it in every class. \r\n\r\nSculpture is done in ApoxieSculpt and painted in acrylic with natural sand on the base. Pinkerton Strikebreaker
The Pinkerton detective agency was all too often used to break up strikes in the 1800s, giving them a somewhat unsavory reputation. Here we have a strikebreaker with some protest signs beneath his boots and a hammer in his hands.\r\n\r\n\r\nApoxieSculpt. Painted in acrylic. He stands a full 12" tall with his ears.

Pinkerton Strikebreaker- composite
The Pinkerton detective agency was all too often used to break up strikes in the 1800s, giving them a somewhat unsavory reputation. While hammers weren't the Pinkerton's weapons of choice, conflicts with striking workers often meant the pinkertons got attacked with whatever was handy, including the occasional hammer. So here its meant to imply he's just taken the weapon away from someone, after they'd used it. (check out the lovely blood smear)\r\n\r\nApoxieSculpt painted in acrylic. Stands 12" tall.

Real Men Wear Phallocrypts- vacant stare
When you are so manly that a kilt will not do, no, even a loincloth is not sufficiently manly, you must turn to the PHALLOCRYPT!\r\n\r\nThe lolling tongue, the twinkle in his eye, the manly pose. He knows what you're here for. You just want to oogle that phallocypt.\r\n\r\nPhallocyrpts are decorative penis sheaths still worn in parts of New Guinea and Indonesia. They're also popular with collectors.\r\n\r\nReal Men Wear Phallocrypts stands 12" tall (with 1.5 inches of phallocypt-y goodness) and was sculpted in ApoxieSculpt. A pirate (or pi-rat if you prefer) shades his eyes as he scans the horizon for his next conquest. Freestanding sculpture in ApoxieSculpt standing approximately 5" tall. Painted in acrylic.\r\n\r\nThe stitching on his patchwork vest was all done by hand. It took about an hour to do all that detail. The underlying frame for the vest is actually just masking tape cut to shape, with ApoxieSculpt layered over it in a thin veneer. I actually sculpted the vest as a seperate piece and then dressed him while it was still wet and drying. |
