Back in the Old Days

The younger generation always has such new-fangled ideas!

A quick sketch of some yellow-billed hornbills. I don't think many birds make a better crotchety old man than a hornbill. ;)

This painting is on a 13" diameter drum, elk hide over a stained pine frame.

I was playing around with the horse silhoutte that I made for the 'Aquarelle' series that I did, and I decided to use it to make a few 'painted ponies' on drums.

Aquarelle translates roughly to painting with water, specifically the process of or result of using thin, transparent washes of watercolor. It is also often associated with the famous (and very wonderful to work with) brand of paper of the same name. I really was going for an odd, water-reminiscent washed look with this, but more bold and stylized, so I thought it was a fitting title

I've never done a project like this, but I was greatly inspired to play with it. I have a small series I am doing in different colors.

I burn my designs onto tagua (vegetable ivory) by hand, every little line is made with a hot needle tool. There's more information available about tagua and these pendants through my site :)

Playbow Husky Drum

10" drum, deerhide over a pine frame. I am showing the back this time (since I get asked about those a lot!) - this is a simple style back. I also have drums with a much more complex backing and double-sided drums that have side lacing instead. Yes, I made this particular drum :)

Sold at the MFF artshow 2008. I'm so happy it found a good home! And with husky owners to boot!

This is an image I just finished for the MFF team. I've been in the mood to do a lot of stylized work lately, and this is one of those things that came out.

Two playful huskies, eventually I think I will put this on a drum.

Up to No Good

This is a collaboration between Skulldog and myself - I sketched and she colored. A commission for Preyfar of two dragons. They seem to be scheming, don't they?

Purple Dragonfly Pendant

This was a custom glyph commission, taken a step further - the purple 'heart' in the center is actually a small piece of paua shell that I carved and inset.
This scan is actually many times the actual size of the piece - actual size being about 1 3/4" x 1 1/2"

Bobcat-Lynx Sketch

A quick sketch of a bobcat-lynx character named Raven for the September anthrosketchexchange LJ.
I love drawing felines!

I sculpted this mask out of plaster taxidermy mache (very lightweight and strong), painted it, and feathered it by hand. It is a completely wearable mask. It is very large, covering the head, neck and shoulders, with feathering to spill down the back and chest. The original mask is for sale, and will be in the MFF 2004 art show. This is probably the most sort-of fan-arty thing I've ever done. ;)
I always envisioned Nanaki to be more of a fire-lion creature, so here is an inspired son of that concept. I'm not much of a gamer, but FFVII will always hold a special place in my heart.
Painting this one in between working on badges and other projects at the moment. :)
