Legal Info: All images and characters here are copyright John Boulton 1997, unless otherwise specified. I still retain copyright on artwork I have created for other people. Artwork in this directory has been solely my creation, or a joint effort with another artist who has given me permission to display the image here. XFiles I designate my strange and likely to be offensive images with an X preceeding their name. With the exception of Xdeye- jb.jpg, these files are not to be distributed, placed on BBS sites, or FTP sites. Too many of my friends have had career problems from their erotic images making their way into conservative professional circles. If you see these images anywhere, please ask for them to be removed. Commision Info: John Boulton is available for commission at rates of $25-30 US for inks. Included with the finished piece will be practice and concept sketches for the subject, and photocopies of whatever else happens to be lying around at the time. The Hollobike and Sunset1 gifs are examples commission quality pieces. Colour is typically extra. Cat1, Fox, and Rosewolf, would take significantly longer to complete, and consequently cost a little more if something along those lines was desired. Commissions may take some time. README2 is filled with information on the gifs located here, what my naming convention means, and a list of my gifs I'd like deleted. It is somewhat long. Some Finishing Thoughts on Art: Fine Art is one of the few creative mediums that allows the subject to be assessed in an instant. In music or writing, a certain amount of time or effort must go into absorbing the piece, before a judgment can be made. Pictures however, are received instantly. The image is present in the mind before the mind can decide if it was something it wanted to look at in the first place. This characteristic of art, means that viewer offensive subjects cannot be avoided as easily as they can in literature or music. It simply is impossible to stop 'seeing' a picture, in the same way a person can stop reading a book if it heads into territory or subjects they disagree with. It must also be said that with writing, unlike art, it is the imagination of the reader that creates the worlds and images described. The end result is a window on the reader's mind as well as the authors. Any image described in words ends up being supplied by the reader's imagination and memory. A story effectively samples through the reader's darkest corners and highest peaks, reflecting their personal world back at them in a different form. Art is almost entirely the opposite, it is the sludge and diamonds of the artists' life, presented on canvas. A picture says a lot more about the artist who made it, than it does about the person looking at it. Art is also very subjective, people don't react to the same image in the same manner. My family finds the Simpson's show really offensive and ugly for example. Capricious sensibilities aside, most people generally respond to most images in a similar manner. Judged in this manner, I have drawn some really sick things that I can't imagine why I put any effort into doing them. These are pieces that I don't like to look at, and that I don't want to show to people. However, I have also done some very beautiful pieces that I love. I've tried to make my online collection represent the beautiful ones. You may in the course of looking through this directory, come to a different conclusions about my choices. It is unfair to make a snap judgment of me over some material deemed offensive. Art is not about censored, or self censorship. No one can say they don't have dark thoughts or desires that are best kept from other people. All I've done is put my thoughts down in a manner that makes them instantly accessible to people. Perhaps I shouldn't have, but art is very much expressing what you feel, even if afterwards it seems to have been a bad idea. Art history is full of examples of small minded individuals destroying artwort that offended their religious, sexual, or political sensibilities. In my mind that is the ultimate crime, to be so egotistical as to judge the value of something for all subsequent cultures and peoples. I don't feel the need to comply with the wishes of people who can't tolerate the existence of something they don't like. Therefore, anyone who is or suspects they might be close- minded, puritanical, judgmental, hypocritical, spiteful, or looking for someone to make a fool of, shouldn't be looking at any artwork, especially mine. This is the warning. After the image loads it will be too late. Additionally, any Xpicture of mine can be considered strange, and likely to bother someone. Other than that, enjoy, and let me know what you think.
