A semi-recent (think months ago) bookmark commission for Aheria, a lovely gal. Colored pencil and ink.

This is horrifying. Tiny baby (spotty butt!) Leona kitten. Pose was referenced from a photo of a kitten, published in "Know Your Cat," a cat behavior book.\r\n\r\nShe is demonically adorable. Slightly different style of shading here. Trying to add some variety with scratchy softening lines. I rather like it.

This is an incredibly heavy little cast alloy piece. It's a keychain... and I made it for Jon's birthday (obviously it's for PM, eh?) This little guy just did *not* want to cast. I carved the piece first in soft wax, then invested it into a plaster/flux mix. After the wax was burned out, hot melted keys were pushed into the mould using centrifical force. \r\n\r\n*cough* I can't guesstimate metals to wax ratios well, took three tries/flows of metal to fill up the mould. All things considered, he turned out pretty well. Intentionally left a bit rough and worn looking.

Just a piece I did to round out my senior seminar art show thingie... Finally going to put up a display (and only, really, because I have to do so to graduate. ptth)... only took me nearly four years to get up the guff. This was mostly just fun.. digital inks, markers, and colored pencil. This will be the last cat like this for a long time, maybe ever. I'm going to disappear for awhile... work on changing my style completely.

Recent bookmark commission... dancing bobcat gal. Pencil and marker on dark brown paper.

Metals project... just finished it today. :) This little guy will be going in my show later this year. The body/head is sheet metal, the tail is wire with a flattened/oxidized tuft, the mane is a solid alloy casting of an acorn top that was then oxidized to make the texture stand out. He's *really* a heavy little piece... about 2x4 inches or so. And yes, he is supposed to be faceless. ;)

Might as well upload this before I start hating it. Just a squirrel girl. Practicing anthros and trying a new species for me. I like her tummy and striped socks. Pose referenced from a Victoria's Secret catalogue. Although, inevitably, I morphed it into a similar, yet different pose.

Three backgrounds (and about three medias!) later, another commission piece. If you are thinking "hrm, this looks a tad bit familiar..." you'd be correct. The other shower piece I posted a long time ago caught the interest of a lovely person who requested something similar. This piece was done for Cateagle and the characters are his intellectual property. Character are digital inks/marker and background is watercolor, marker, and chalk pastel. \r\n\r\nAmazingly, THIS piece inspired yet another nice person to want something similiar of himself and his mate. Have I found my niche? :) \r\n\r\n

Leona and PM... I think she's telling him in an oh so subtle way to shush. Jon did the drawing, I did the color. This is watercolor and a little colored pencil on cold-press watercolor paper. Pretty large, 11X15. Art is copyright Melissa Swanson and Jonathon Reese, 2002

A fibers project done in Shibori. I stitched in Leona with dental floss(!) then\r\ndyed it in indigo a couple times and took all the stitches back out. This is about\r\n8-10 hrs. of work. I'm happy with it. Looks better IRL, of course.

Leona, cast in alloy. She's about an inch cubed... taller than she is wide/long by about a fourth of an inch. For an idea of mass, I had to melt 6 or 7 large keys (like a normal house/car key) to fill the mould. \r\n\r\nHad some difficulties guesstimating metal amounts again, and had to do two flows. Which is why her paws are so thin. This little girl weights a ton. I wish I'd have had time to solder a loop on her so she could be a cool keychain thing.

Had to wait to upload this after JonJon left Cincy to go to his ma's and has no comp. access. Surprise for him for valentine's day. *ducks thrown objects... feeds everyone chocolate* This is digital over tinted pencil work. Almost looks like watercolor or chalk pastels. I like. Oh... and I (heart) you, Jon. :)

Yup. Another metals piece... this one is made of a combo of brass and copper. The black bg behind the trees is actually micron on metal. The chemicals we have in the studio just weren't working on this like I'd hoped. So I got creative. :) \r\nLooks better IRL... the moon, trees, and wolf are a mirror polish, the copper border is a soft sanded matte finish. If I can get a better scan, I'll reupload... but this was the best so far.

The final one for now. I've still got a few more bookmarks to do for people. This one for Holly Ann took nearly all my patience. Heh. Many details, cool character, headache to get them all on a 2X6 inch piece of paper. ;) Note the fact I tried to do an ubercool "look her magical globe is glowing creating two light sources" type thing. Not sure how successful it was.\r\n\r\nMarker, pencil, ink.

Been a while since I've really used the colored pencils. This one is on deep green, textured paper. For Pseudo, to replace a really ugly old pic he has *framed* at his place. He looks a bit too intense/ticked here... but I still quite like it. I forgot how much I enjoyed playing with colors in a piece like this. There are some flaws that are a bit too far along to fix now, but it was a fun bit of diversion for a snowy afternoon. :)

I got Prisma markers (insert delighted scream here) and now I'm hooked and had to buy more. *awaits Mister Art delivery anxiously* Anyway... for my first attempt with 'em I did this really simplistic image of Leona's head. I know, oh so exciting... but I was getting used to the marker tips sizes and wanted big areas to work with. I really love these things... they almost look like watercolors. :)

Recent badge commission for the wonderful Spirit Walker. He said it was well received at FC and gathered a few compliments. I am happy to hear this since I was a bit nervous. This was my first con badge request, I'm delighted it went well. \r\n\r\nMarker and some colored pencil.
