Administrator at Work

Now, I don't usually draw other folks' characters without a direct invitation, (details in my readme file) but I'll make an exception for Ch'marr since he's long indicated he's always open to pics of his character. So here is our admin, doing that admin thing that he does.

A few elements will no doubt be noticed by those who inhabit the (unofficial) IRC channel. Can I help it if I'm observant?

Trade: Aekemi

Art trade with Kristina Cline, of her new Japanese Bobtail cat "Aikemi", recently named on her DA account. This image combines design details of the first two renditions of this character and then sets her loose in a playground.

So far, I'm averaging two trades a year :). But this one only took about a 1.5 weeks to complete, so I must be getting faster.

Trade: Angyl at Sunset

Completed art trade with 'Angyl', his fursona gazes into the sunset from a rooftop. The lighting effect/s is something completely unprecedented in my work, coming after a lot of trial-and-error, but it seemed to fit the mood of the pic.

Ice Cream Dancing (contest entry)

Contest entry for Arctic-Sekai on FurAffinity. The theme was "ice cream" and my entry exploits an unexplored suggestion made by Arctic while describing the rules. Submitted six minutes before the contest closed, it won third place :)

Heat-wave commemorative and I guess you can call it a gift pic too, starring Backlash's character "Zak" learning just how durable 99-cent store flip-flops are on a roasting hot parking lot. Attributions on image.

My interpretation of Kritterfox's facial appearance. He's due to appear in a side story of my comic that will appear on FA first, then here once events permit it to be inserted, since it doesn't follow anything currently scheduled to happen.

Trade: Malkavia

Art trade with Yatenstar, this is her character Malkavia, described as a personality that can swing from saintly to utter cruelty, killing with about as much thought as most would put into breathing. Witness her obvious pleasure at the violent death she's visited on some unfortunate soul offscreen on the bed. And now the unlucky soul who just walked in on her is next to die, probably knifed and stomped to death with those stilleto boots :)

Firsts for me: violent imagery, blood splatter effects, reflections (the underside of that boot was tougher than it looked), and the use of solid blacks in shading the folds in the ribbons, not mention yet another improvement in my abilities.

Patrol Leader Penny

Stemming from an incident during a local furmeet.

This pic is noteworthy for being only the third time since '99 that I've drawn someone else's character, since I actually require permission or an invitation before drawing anyone else's character/s. Imagine that :)

Trade (Sysko)

My rendition of Rensis Maxwell (now known as "Sysko"*), a character of 'Mottenfest' (now known as 'Urban-Coyote'*), finally appears in glorious color after more delays than I care to keep track of. Tweaked and refined in a number of ways since it was last posted as a B/W image, it also marks my first successful rendition of a canine/lupine character, as well my first attempt at a gothic-inspired outfit, borrowed in part from www.x-tra-x.de

One of my co-workers wanted a pic of herself as a cartoon cat. She was quite pleased with the result, presented here (with permission) after some minor digital tweaks.

Trade: Claire

Long overdue art trade (only the second I've ever done) with 'Toshi-Kun', it's his witch-cat Claire, whom I've depicted taking a late-night cruise.

Up till now, I'd never done a character with the lighting effects that this scene (which was my idea) called for. Thus, hours of trial and error till I was satisfied with the result. It wound up being (possibly) the best-looking image I've posted since hooking up with VCL.

Trail Trouble comic excerpt

A commissioned comic for "Backlash" on FA, his character Kira attempts to cross some muddy ground in footwear that isn't really up to the task, amply demonstrated by the rest of the comic, viewable at the [Comment] link.

My interpretation of Zak and Kira Aryil, the second and third guest characters to appear in my comic, slated to appear near the end of the next installment.

Anytime I need to do a full "my version" design of someone else's character (usually if the owner's drawing style can't be used directly) I start with headshots like these to nail down a model for my future use. They may be tweaked with practice, but they generally remain faithful to these first decent attempts.

Rise of the Robot

Birthday pic for ZenMigawa on FurAffinity, and follow-up to a pic I did in his sketchbook during Anthrocon 2006. Lineart processed with ACD Canvas 8 (obtained from a British computer magazine coverdisc, no less) and colored with Micrografx Picture Publisher, making this a hybrid vector/raster pic.
