After I saw a recently snapped photo of a redwing blackbird, I was reminded of how much I loved them as a kid. They used to be among my favourite birds, included in ravens, red tailed hawks, fishing eagles, owls of all kinds and hummingbirds. I liked the way they looked enough to create a dragon character out of their design. But this particular one doesn't look a thing like the original I thought up many years ago, I can't recall it's exact details. Anyway, random bird themed dragon from my sketchbook!

Commission for a good friend of mine, Selunca. This is actually only a detail, the whole piece was a full 18" X 20", way too big to scan in less than four pieces. My first attempts to scan it all failed, so I just left it like this. The entire piece was these two gazing dreamily into one another's eyes, framed in a heart with a swirly blue design bordering it. A real pleasure to create for her. ^^ Thanks sel!

I've had this character concept in my sketchbook for a while and my head a lot longer, so I finally decided to make something of one of the sketches. This is Rook, another of my mammalian dragons. Rook is Cyrus' best friend and near litter mate, having had grown up together for their entire young lives. They are also sparring partners, but both have their own strengths and weaknesses. Cyrus uses the chain weapons (manriki gazari, unsure of spelling) and Rook uses the kwon tao (spear-like weapon, again unsure of spelling). Man, I can't spell any of the weapons I seem to want to assign to my characters! I should fix that.

aquarius_sm.jpg
Image: aquarius_sm.jpg   513x840 171272 bytes 2005.01.13

I realize this is off-topic, but bear with me. I have been pretty good about keeping on topic, but I'm very proud of this so I'd like to put it here. I won't be offended if it's removed, however.

This started out as a random sketch, but I just decided to go further with it. I suppose it represents the sign aquarius (of which I am one), which is actually an air sign. But I find myself being split between my dominant air element and secondary water element (which is almost as strong). Funny thing, people who have either of those as their dominant element are most of the time artistic in some way. So in conclusion, it's an ode to aquarians, the sky, clouds and rain (all three I love to death) and of course, artistic nudity.

Now a badge for Lakota's mate, Zehklos! With this one I was able to use my long lost markers on the figure itself, which I think looks a lot better a smoother than watercolour with these smaller images. Again, a blast to make, such great character design!

A badge for the wonderful Lakota! Lakota was the first person to ever commission me, so I'm very glad to make this for her. Her character design is wonderful, and this badge was so much fun to make.

Badge number two for the night, my goal is three, but I might do more. I love her character design, and I was happy I got to use earth tones in this one. Having the oppertunity to make a badge for kahvie just plain makes me happy. ^^

I added some black designs to make the composition feel less empty. Badge for Tizzrah, in all his glory. ^^ I'll be working hard to get badges done before FC, but if anyone orders one from me anytime soon, it won't be finished by then.

My contribution to Bloodhound Omega's 'After party' portfolio! A lot of great artists are participating in this portfolio (such as bloodhound herself, Felinecanine, Silberwolf, Ultraviolet, Shadowraine and others) , the theme being what happens behind closed doors after or during a very fancy party. I just got done working in this, a late birthday/christmas gift combined for my brother! I'm going to mat and frame it for him before he leaves for CA hopefully too. I know it seems similar to another piece of mine, and I did that on purpose. A while back I did a piece for my sister called 'Star Leopard'. My brother liked that one a lot, but for his piece I thought I'd replace pink with blue, and simplify the composition a bit. In the future I hope to make some limited edition prints of both these pieces to sell as a pair. Bah, talk is cheap, I need to get on the prints thing don't I?
Done on 11" X 17" smooth bristol with watercolour, coloured pencil and gouache.

I had to rush this painting since it was an assignment due in my painting class, but it turned out ok. A lot of the tree is cropped, since it's the most out-of-place thing in this piece, and I didn't feel like scanning this in pieces. In fact, this began as a very dense, dark foresty paiting, but since I was pinched for time, I switch to something quicker but still satisfactory. I like the grass though. =)

christmas_star_upload.jpg

One of my projects which takes precedence over a few things lately, a christmas card commission for my mom! Done pretty much exactly to her specifications, in watercolour, coloured pencil and gouache. I don't expect her to pay me, of course, she's my mom and for something this small it would feel selfish. Besides, this is a cool way I get to show off my art to everyone on the card list, family and friends alike. The image will be made into special cards (minus the silly makeshift photoshop border), and all this makes me feel, well... special! Happy holidays everyone!

Badge for Klandagi, who has both a killer character design and the best mood and disposition of any commissioner ever! ^^ It was a pleasure and a ton of fun to create this badge for her. There's still plenty of room for badge commissions, to drop me a line if you want one!

After my first piece depicting Peyton, I thought of something much cooler looking I could do, and so did it! This will be the final illustration project in two of my classes, and it's one of my best to date. I can see the mistakes I made, and when I overworked parts of it, but overall I think it turned out good. I took some artistic and stylistic liberties with musk ox anatomy, but not so much that anyone would notice unless they were musk oxen experts.

One of my drawing classes took a trip to the natural history museum in Denver to draw all the dead stuffed creatures and fossils, and I seem to have spent a lot of time at the musk oxen. I never realized before, but they are really cool looking animals, kinda cute. They're just big lumps of powerful arctic fuzz! So I created a musk ox character. I think I botched the background majorly. I made the mistake of adding bright colours where I don't think they belong, so I might do a portrait of him with more planning and a more appropriate background for another project. So this is Peyton! He looks powerful and scary, but he's really just a big marshmallow. <3

mikil_badge_upload.jpg

badge for a brand new character, Mikil (means quick in hawaiian). She's a short statured, short tempered gryfalcon who's an expert assassin and the fastest of her tribe. I actually made up Mikil a very VERY long time ago when I was a kid, though I don't remember her original name. I played as her when I first read Mercedes Lackey's 'The Black Gryphon' when it first came out. Mikil was a combination of Skandranon and Zhaneel, both of which I loved too much to play as just one of them. She's just one of the many characters I played as a kid, and one of the most in depth.

with FC coming up, I thought it would be cool to make my own conbadge for once! No, I'm not attending this year, I just thought it would be fun. So if you see anyone around with this badge, it sure as hell isn't me. Also, for a short time I AM taking conbadge commissions! Contact me for further info. More to come, serving as examples for future badge commissions, and for the fun of it.

stalker_upload.jpg
Image: stalker_upload.jpg   617x700 154587 bytes 2004.11.21

This started out as a loving sort of sketch in my sketchbook from a while back, but I decided to make it a bit more sinister. This was mostly an excercise in texture control. I tried a monochrome wash, and tried to control the colours with pencils and gouache. The white was fun, playing with texture purely with the white paint. the way the wolf's teeth came out made it look like he/she is missing teeth, not to mention that bunny's belly *sigh*

I was going to put in a background, but I made the mistake of leaving out the background wash to concentrate in the figures. Although there are a lot of mistakes in this, I am pretty pleased with how it turned out.

ursetta_rosa_upload.jpg
Image: ursetta_rosa_upload.jpg   797x645 198918 bytes 2004.11.16

This piece I have had in mind for quite some time, since a couple years ago when my mother's father (my grandfather Jack Ursetta) passed away. Ursetta means "little bear" in Italian, thus the relatively small looking bear. My grandfather was also an incredible gardner and specialized in roses. Because the symbol of the bear and the experiences with nature and gardening my mom, aunts and uncle had as kids, this is a very powerful combination for them. In fact two of my aunts have gotten tattooos of some variation of the rose and bear since my grandfather's death. So this christmas I'm giving my mother this original and giving each household a professional print (matted and framed).

Watercolours, coloured pencil and gouache on 14" X 17" smooth bristol.

Long overdue giftart for Silberwolf for being my 500th watcher (long time ago). This is a werewolf character he created some time ago. I know I wasn't supposed to include the cloak and he was supposed to be in an urban setting, but.... I forgot about the cape thing (and I think it looks rather cool anyway) and didn't have time for a decent background. ^^; Hope it's ok though, I like the way it turned out. I spent endless ours tweaking with a photoshop background that never turned out. It looks better blank like this. For this I used a drafting pencil instead of my mechanical pencil, so if it looks rough or messy at all, it's because of that. *whew* enjoy!

"I willingly give myself up to you, knowing I'm safe no matter what your decision will be"

thought I'd finally upload this here. A much enjoyed commission for Rose Quoll, simple pencil on white paper. I highly enjoyed this one. After drawing one too many wolves, cats, and other such apex predators and canid things, a smaller creature's form is fun. Afterall, I've been reading the Redwall books for the first time, so I'm leaning more towards creatures like mice, squirrels and badgers. Finished commission, no critiques please! Enjoy Rose

breeze_upload.jpg
Image: breeze_upload.jpg   496x700 107329 bytes 2004.11.03

I started on this after being reminded of a series of recurring dreams I had a few years ago. In this dream I was (human me) a demon hunter. I wore my kimono (I have one like this) like a trenchcoat. I used a typical rattan staff and a sword (a weapon I've had in my dreams ever since I was a kid) which materialized out of my palm before I go into battle. In these dreams I was incredibly nimble, I could jump higher than any normal human and run as fast as the cars on the freeway. But I ran with a breezed silence, as if I was just a ripple of wind in the bushes.

This particular piece was just based off me in those dreams, using Wolf Nymph again as my medium (minus the her darker marking just this once).

Since I'll likely not be able to appear online or do much art over the next several days, an early happy halloween to everyone! Yes, I know this is very cheap, and to those who recognize the sketch it's even cheaper. Sorry, but costumes and social activities take priority over art right now. Have a safe weekend everyone!
