winter.jpg
Image: winter.jpg   461x600 43362 bytes 2002.01.25

'Winter' is, for reasons best known to himself, a
bat-eared foxish sort, though his ears are rather
too small, unfortunately. The piece has marker,
greylead, pen ink, brush ink, and coloured pencil.
He is a partner to 'Autumn'. I rather like his pants
and bird-skull tatters, I rather dislike his face.

wick.jpg
Image: wick.jpg   419x600 26321 bytes 2002.01.17

I did a tiny little sketch at work while pondering my
alter-ego's recent appearance in the online furry comic
'Jack'. There David's done her in her normal form - a
vampire rabbit. But I was wondering what she would look
like as a demon, so I did a little doodle on a scrap of
paper.

What came out was this delicate little creature, with a
wary, warning look and fragile, tiny wings. At first, she
was sitting on top of a cliff, but my husband mistook it
for a candle. After a moment, I realised that it was far
prettier this way, so she was retraced and coloured in
Adobe Photoshop with my Wacom.

I'm enormously pleased with her. I probably shouldn't be.
She was done while listening to 'Teardrop' by Massive
Attack on continuous repeat, which might explain the rather
inoffensive creature she has turned out as instead of the
demon I'd envisaged.

autumn.jpg
Image: autumn.jpg   357x550 35696 bytes 2002.01.07

My mother, being a wonderful artist, and much better than
myself, gave me some Copic markers for Christmas. I was
thinking idly about the seasons, and how much I love the
gothic style just for the intricacy and beauty of the
costumes. Out came Autumn, a Maned Wolf who is near the
end of her three month cycle and is pictured summoning the
season of Winter in.

The piece has marker, greylead, pen ink, brush ink, and
coloured pencil. Autumn is my first piece for 2002, and I'm
quite pleased with her.

merrychristmas.jpg

Merry Christmas to all from Silverblue the Gothbunny. Stay safe and be kind to one another.

moon_priestess.jpg

A cheetah priestess decorates her dwelling place
in honour of the moon. This was an experiment in
two ways - the main part was that I sometimes take
pen immediately to paper to remind myself not to
be constrained or controlled by the myth of the
perfect line. So the cheetah was drawn directly
in ink to ensure I could not rub out any line I was
unhappy with. The second experiment involved the
mottled yellow paper I used, which was interesting.
Cold-pressed, it was extremely un-absorbant, to the
point of making shading difficult.

I'm reasonably pleased with the result.

roon_swash_shaded.jpg
Image: roon_swash_shaded.jpg   331x550 39437 bytes 2001.11.17

Roon is copyright himself, naturally. For technical details,
this was inked with India Ink and a 00 brush while watching
the Lost Boys and the new season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
The fine hatching was done with a 0.1 micron pen while watching
the director's cut of Bladerunner.

The right mood is essential. Grin. For reference, I used a
book on costumes and codes of dress, so here we have a 17th
Century Roon lion for your viewing pleasure. I'm sorry about
the lack of tweed, my friend. I just couldn't handle the
terrible pressure of tweed, which is related to the terrible
secret of space. Thankyou. I shall now go sleep.

houseoffun_bw.jpg

Amber, Ivory, and Silverblue pose like the poseurs they are.
Welcome to the House of Fun. Amber is the punk mouse, Ivory
the little bat, and Silverblue the rabbit. A bunch of
Haemophages from my comic, Lacunae. May I manage to actually
finish some more work on it one day.

caracal.jpg
Image: caracal.jpg   341x500 30798 bytes 2001.10.27

A caracal in traditional Egyptian clothing.

dance.jpg
Image: dance.jpg   367x500 35103 bytes 2001.10.19

It's a strange thing, catharsis. But it's something I need, and the
easiest way to achieve it is to dance. I'm not a particularly wonderful
dancer, by any means, but I enjoy it. It's like lightning in the blood.
There's nothing like throwing your head back and feeling the pain peel
out into the violence of music and noise. There's nothing like undoing
the boundaries of your own skin.

rodney_silverblue.jpg
Image: rodney_silverblue.jpg   600x372 50312 bytes 2001.10.19

It's all Radd's fault. ALL RADD'S FAULT, I say! In any case, a while back the
concept (I shudder to call it an idea) of 'Rodney pr0n' came up. So here are
Rodney and Silverblue in a compromising position. If by any chance anyone has
perused my art, they'll have noticed the distinct lack of pr0n of any kind. So
if I go to hell for this, it's Radd's fault.

Rodney is copyright Radd...and toothy-eyed Silverblue belongs to herself. I
was possessed! Possessed I say!

bloodmage.jpg
Image: bloodmage.jpg   317x450 39847 bytes 2001.10.08

A feline executes the beginings of an ascetic ritual, feeding the power with his own blood. For some reason, I particularly enjoyed doing the background charts for this picture.

bunny.jpg
Image: bunny.jpg   428x400 21227 bytes 2001.10.01

Gods...am I ill? Where on earth did this anime-style thing come from? My only condolence is that he's wearing tartan pants. Anime bunnies indeed.

rainforest.jpg
Image: rainforest.jpg   354x550 37153 bytes 2001.10.01

For a while now I have been curious about drawing an anthropomorphic bat who was resting as bats should - hanging by their hinf feet. Fortunately, I came across a photo of a fruit bat doing just that today, though I decided to make her an insectivore since I'm fond of the leaf-shaped noses. Rainforest is shown just waking up in a pleasant area of the Australian bush.

cave.jpg
Image: cave.jpg   356x450 32262 bytes 2001.09.27

For the life of me, I have no idea what this thin fox-thing with the boneless arms is. I've been going through a complete lack of inspiration recently and nothing I work on seems to fashion itself well under my fingers. Sigh.

jack.jpg
Image: jack.jpg   396x550 46474 bytes 2001.09.01

Jack, the avatar of Wrath and personification of Death, belongs to David Hopkins
(http://jack.keenspace.com). Go read his comic. It is good! I have been enjoying
it a lot. And of course I couldn't resist drawing his grim reaper bunny. Jack
does look a little young here, but perhaps he got his beauty sleep the night before.

coyotewoman.jpg
Image: coyotewoman.jpg   338x500 26464 bytes 2001.08.27

This native American themed coyote lady is copyright her creator Mr Heinsohn. I have a fondness for dream catchers, even though being owned by a cat means that they tend to suffer abrupt and horrible deaths. In any case, I would like to be able to make them...

pellier.jpg
Image: pellier.jpg   379x550 33513 bytes 2001.08.27

Pellier the reluctant poisoner, better known as Pellier Maudits due to his somewhat unfortunate role in life as a seer. Pellier is my sixth-sense and augury-raddled character from our IronClaw campaign, and is a rather tiny pale furred bat. He is of the de Vol family, but given the lack of nobility in his line, would not be subject to lordly justice should his store of herbs ever be thoroughly searched...

romance.jpg
Image: romance.jpg   358x400 32785 bytes 2001.08.17

In some ways, despite being a perky romantic goth, I tend to draw far too much angsty gothy art. And, really, I am romanced and treated most excessively well on a daily basis by my real life mate, so it seems meet that I should actually draw something sweet for a change. And so here are Silverblue the white doe and Sean the black lop buck snuggling together in a rose garden. Silverblue seems a little shy, but then so is Sean. In some ways I see their romance as fairly innocent and gentle.

bluebeard.jpg
Image: bluebeard.jpg   500x407 51370 bytes 2001.08.13

Inspired by both the faerie tale story of Blue Beard (and I'm sure everyone knows it enough that there is no point in repeating it here), and Nick Cave's song 'Do you love me?' which is a wonderful anthem to obsession and blood. The pencils did not come out nearly as delicately as I had hoped, so it looks like I have a lot of work ahead of me to develop my colouring skills. I may do more of these little pictures, as I do enjoy them.

wardrobewrong.jpg
Image: wardrobewrong.jpg   379x577 34244 bytes 2001.08.05

'When wardrobe gets it wrong'. Imagine being sent out for the day in a pink mohair sweater. Of course, TerrieKitten will probably have sore paws by the end of the day in those boots. The wonderful TerrieKitten is copyright Boris Chwosta, and naturally Silverblue is moi. Terrie was kind enough to do a sketchbook swap with me at Anthrocon, so everyone be nice to 'em, right?

com_hermhyena.jpg
Image: com_hermhyena.jpg   417x550 28398 bytes 2001.08.03

This is a commission piece (and so the dear creature is copyright Jurann) of a hyena in a vaguely roman bath setting. At first I was not quite sure how to represent a herm character with any kind of delicacy, then I remembered a greek statue I had seen in the Hermitage museum. It was of a teenaged herm, curled up asleep, and completely at peace and innocent. I tried to copy the expression as much as possible, and this is the result.

silverblade.jpg
Image: silverblade.jpg   368x500 28493 bytes 2001.08.02

At Anthrocon I met the very pleasant Silverblade, a vulpine character, and we arranged an art swap much to my pleasure. So here he is, with a little information about that globe-topped staff I put in his hands. For some reason I particularly like his cloak and vest.

orphansoftheempire.jpg
Image: orphansoftheempire.jpg   379x450 34833 bytes 2001.08.01

"So it's farewell sweet Caroline! Farewell Isobelle! Goodbye gentle ladies of
the old order." This picture was inspired by Johnny Clegg's song 'Orphans of
the Empire' which describes the confusion and grief that the white colonists
of Africa might have felt upon leaving due to the uprisings they caused. I was
very strongly taken by the imagery, having felt something of the amazing pull
Africa can force upon you with its beauty and alien nature. The lady in question
is an African Civet rather than a more appropriate imported animal, but I felt
like drawing something unusual.
"He tells you confidentially he wished he understood the indigenies. But the
shadows they are lengthening and the sun it must set. Bewildered and confused,
he scurries home to his bed - 'Hold me close, Africa. Fill my soul, Africa...let
me in'."

pseudodragon.jpg
Image: pseudodragon.jpg   600x419 34317 bytes 2001.06.29

Here is a little pen and ink and pencil sketch of a pseudodragon, the familiar of the sorceress in our current third edition dungeons and dragons game. I thought she was cute, so I put her up for the odd dragon lover out there :)

flirt.jpg
Image: flirt.jpg   500x344 33492 bytes 2001.06.15

"Forget the many steps to heaven, it never happened and it ain't so hard. Happiness is a loaded weapon and a short cut is better by far." Silverblue flirts with another phage, and at least one of the two of them is happy with what they're getting. This? This is the closest to true love you can get when it's cold.

asagwe_wetbar.jpg
Image: asagwe_wetbar.jpg   369x400 34997 bytes 2001.05.19

This is Asagwe. He's a Child of Bast-Imret. He has a wetbar. He's coming to Anthrocon. He's copyright himself, or he won't make you drinks.

yeri.jpg
Image: yeri.jpg   700x472 41463 bytes 2001.05.09

Another of the creatures from the Lay of the Akirikals, a feline creature with
distinct reptilian features. They were called Yeri, shapechangers with a caste
system based on how draconic they were. The higher the birth caste, the greater
the responsibility to the Yeri community. The critter in particular on the left
is Da'Huninon.

dalgorri.jpg
Image: dalgorri.jpg   500x406 29984 bytes 2001.05.08

I recently reread an ancient story of mine and have attempted to draw one of the evil creatures from it, a Dalgorri, which is vaguely like an undead gryphon. I'm having immense fun with these half-finished ink and pencil works. They're somehow very freeing.

flapper.jpg
Image: flapper.jpg   389x500 20753 bytes 2001.05.04

I've been in a sort of swing-type mood recently. So here's a flapper, pearl bedecked and not patient enough to wait for her tom cat to come home from the war.

abeantons.jpg
Image: abeantons.jpg   384x600 33753 bytes 2001.04.28

I know that a lot of you out there know of Chris Goodwin's amazing work,
including his charming character 'Abe'. Now, I've a fondness for good-natured
kindly-looking guys myself, so here he is, shopping at the wonderful (and wonderfully camp) 'Antons',
which is a simply amazing store in Melbourne, Australia. The only reason the
mule looks so peacable is that he has not yet had a chance to browse the
pricetags - the simply gorgeous clothes start at a price calculated to give
cardiac arrest and head right on up from there.
However, aside from the numerous problems I have already spotted in this image,
one is glaring enough that it requires comment. I used Chris' 'Supermodel' sheet
to get an idea of Abe's proportions and so on, then put it away.
Bad mistake.
For when I compared them again, after I'd finished, I noticed...
My picture is identical in pose. I certainly had not intended this, and my
subconscious fooled me nicely. Damnation. That will teach me.
