Ebony and Budgie Bird! I bet most of you know Ebony Tigress, one of the sweetest tigresses online! (actually, I haven't yet met a tigress that wasn't sweet... ;D) Ebony's always doing pics of everyone else, and has done so many pics with Synn in them, that I wanted to do something in thanks, and here it is, Ebony in Flight with her Budgie Bird! It's funny... some things I would draw differently now, like the wings (I wasn't too concerned with making them realistic cuz they're "dream wings" , but still...), but as always I learned something while coloring it, and had fun, too.

415x648 61122 bytes 2001.11.16
KitttyKAT! I'd wanted to do Katherine Barber's character looking more feline, and I finally did. :D Her character is supposed to have pink shadows on her body - fun! Hey, any excuse to draw a feline is a good one... ;)
| Image: Syn-Kibagami.jpg
619x594 95264 bytes 2001.11.16
Kibigami! My half of a second art trade with KitttyKat, AKA Katherine Barber, a fellow artist at the VCL. She drew Lorelei for me; I drew her boyfriend's character, Kibagami, in return. He is an anthro white tiger, with the green eyes and unusual striping per her description. The background is from a Dover book; the katakana sort of say "Ki-Ba-Ga-Mi" and "Ne-Ko" (yes, I am not good at Japanese! My apologies!). If I had the time, I'd go back and fix him up, and do a much more ornamented pattern on his outfit.
| Image: syn-SilvermaneFIN.jpg
621x576 99807 bytes 2001.11.16
SilverMane/Maverick! An EZboard pic for a good online friend of mine. A wise, battle-scarred white lion, with a black-furred right arm. The armor was adapted from another person's depiction of the character, per request. (BTW: I love blade-weapons!) Your place by the fire is safe, Silvermane! :D (Boy, I just noticed all the BLUE in my recent posts... ergh... sorry!)
| Image: syn-kingugwa.jpg
594x475 74121 bytes 2001.11.16
The very cool Kingugwa! A gnoll, but as a warrior of the god Tempus, he's better-groomed and more behaved than most. Per CitizenRob's description, he's strong but quick, and more human in proportions. A challenge for me - I haven't drawn many hyenas, and I tend to make them more animal-like than here. Two views, like in a "Gnoll's Guide to Anatomy" or something. I tried to make him modestly covered...

| Image: syn-tacco.jpg
576x438 58515 bytes 2001.11.16
Tacco Hirashima! Property of Reno Maxwell of Side 7 and the VCL. I drew him slightly anthro about the front paws and hind legs like Synn ON PURPOSE; the two characters are not related and any similarity is coincidence. I picked him to draw for our trade because I thought he would be fun to draw in my hell-cat style; he didn't originally look like my Synnabar - it was my artistic license. This is a good example of the "anthros" I draw for myself (not the ones requested or for art trades or commissions); most are, like this, usually more animal than human, but with dextrous front paws. For once, I am pleased with the face. Pencil sketch mouse-colored in Photoshop 6 (and boy is the mouse tired ;P).
| Image: syn-PAF.jpg
521x576 44343 bytes 2001.11.16
Abe the Icon! (AKA PAF! AKA chris goodwin) Another artist I "look up to". I'm sorry I missed you at Anthrocon...
| Image: syn-syrma.jpg
504x702 134287 bytes 2001.11.16
Syrma! In all her glory... inspired by an art-deco statue I saw somewheres, and Celtic Art (via Dover Books). Pencil figure, frame constructed in Illustrator, all the rest in Photoshop. I really tried on the ornamentation... She belongs to Andwyn AKA Melanie J. Gibbons. :D Thanks, Melanie!
| Image: syn-CoraBday.jpg
648x615 83818 bytes 2001.11.16
Coragule's having her cake... but maybe not eating it (that's a pretty ugly cupcake). If only I was as good at drawing snack-treats as I am at eating them! I had fun doing a sort of "super-deformed" Cora - I hope she doesn't mind! (BTW: THANKS NAT!!!!) Pencil, mouse-colored in Photoshop (as they all are, lately).
| Image: Syn-Cerberus.jpg
430x507 63442 bytes 2001.07.26
Cerberus will always be one of my favorite classic monsters of mythology (like the Minotaur, the Chimera, and so on). This sketch of him was for a were/fantasy 'zine online. mechanical pencil on sketch paper.
| Image: Syn-Asa.jpg
449x575 46786 bytes 2001.07.03
Asa! By the talented AND amazingly prolific Allison Reed (the javachickn). I saw a non-anthro wingless pic of him here at the VCL & fell in love! I drew him non-anthro too, and looking kind of like a doberman, tho' I think he's supposed to be more dingo-like. I might go back and color the wings in, too. (BTW: I'd love to get back to experimenting with backgrounds & poses & media SOON! Anyone have some free time to lend me?)
| Image: syn-Mistyc.jpg
461x576 64807 bytes 2001.07.03
MistyK! (I found out too late that he was called MistyK, not MistyC) Property of the very kind Cesarin the White DraGoN, a wonderful artist here at the VCL. His appearance & armor, etc. are based off a lovely picture by Draco that Cesarin supplied me with.
| Image: syn-GSLTiger.gif
281x333 38048 bytes 2001.07.03
This was for a commission; it was to be kept small and simple so it would print well at several different sizes, and on different types of surfaces (T-shirts, sports equipment, etc). Color, anatomy per request. Still don't like the eyes - they were better on an older version, but I had to go with what the commissioner wanted. I edited the name off.
| Image: Syn-NGWereCora.jpg
470x622 51240 bytes 2001.07.03
Coragule (were-form)! The Hammsanrrah herself, creation of Natalie Goodridge. According to Natalie's background info, as "Village Chief" Coragule wouldn't shift - but Cora looked so cool in a pic she did that I wanted to try one too. Pronambi coat-patterns are a (fun) challenge to draw! (sorry about any image artifacts)
| Image: Syn-NGWereLuathry.jpg
557x613 62021 bytes 2001.07.03
Luathry (were-form)! Here's Nat Goodridge's awesome Luathry in his were-form (I encourage you to visit her site - http://hasuvrah.critter.net/) I TRIED for a more interesting pose... note the vaguely handlike paws with thumbs, and more-animal-than-humanoid body (shoulders to the side, etc.) - pretty typical of the way I draw were-creatures.
| Image: Syn-NGLuathryCharStud.jpg
479x576 56123 bytes 2001.07.03
Luathry! A character study for Natalie Goodridge of her Pronambi character. Yeah, I know the pose is kinda stiff, but I was trying to work out how his coat-pattern wrapped around his anatomy. *laughs* Yeah, I ALSO know that his legs shouldn't be bent that much at the knee...
| Image: syn-Kitttykat02.jpg
502x592 77750 bytes 2001.07.03
KitttyKat! (and her golden mouse) Katherine Barber's very lovely creation. I've not had much practice drawing anthro-females lately, and this put me to the test! Check out KitttyKat (a fellow Tori fan :D) here at the VCL!
| Image: Syn-Jyiis.jpg
794x576 110701 bytes 2001.07.03
Not a gryphon - but a GREPHAUIN! (Uh, did I spell it wrong?) The inimitable Jyiis, squid-topped paintbrush in hand! Hopefully re-appearing soon in technicolor... property of the equally inimitable (and super-kind!) Melody Lu! I'll do a gryph soon, I promise! *steeling herself* "And I will never need umbrellas in the rain..." *trudges back to work*
| Image: syn-Cheetahchar.jpg
413x504 81201 bytes 2001.07.03
Here's a dye-sub printout from a scan of a gouache painting from 1995 of a cheetah I did in college *whew!* It served the dual purpose of being a stamp pic for an assignment, and being the portrait of an online friend. Heh - 32 cents for a stamp! Dig the yellow-green sun....
| Image: syn-SentientShark.jpg
376x648 54220 bytes 2001.07.03
While I'm trying to finish things, here's some posts in response to requests to see some of my old and/or "real media" stuff. Yes, point and laugh! This was from '92, when I tried (and had time) to experiment with underwater lighting - it's a sentient shark, from a species I made up. It's gouache. Whoooopeee!
| Image: syn-PkeetGoddess.jpg
675x372 62045 bytes 2001.05.09
For Parakeet Goddess! Character belongs to Kaitlyn McKay; she's a leopardlike (I took liberties with spots, etc.) feline with green eyes, a nose ring & horns per specific description - gotta love those horned cats - let's see more of 'em! :D She's slightly anthro (slightly handlike paws with thumbs, sturdy hind legs that enable her to stand and walk upright for short periods of time, etc.) so she can hold her weapon of choice, a wooden staff (not pictured). For those interested, Synnabar has the same overall build when in pantherine form - their anatomy is my own design, and shouldn't be taken for "real" cat anatomy. Pencil & Photoshop 6.
| Image: Syn-EbonyTigress.jpg
509x525 73144 bytes 2001.05.03
Ebony Tigress! She's slightly anthro here, and is the exclusive property of Sheryn Brown - her big cats (and wolves and dragons and...) are simply gorgeous! Check her out here at the VCL! I gave Ebony a new pencil-box cuz someone stole her other one :::growls:::
| Image: Syn-Jasper.jpg
429x600 107049 bytes 2001.05.01
Jasper! He's the creation of a very talented artist by the name of Anna Pieruccini - check out her stuff here & at Yerf! She has such a way with color, and did such an awesome pic of Synn for me that I tried to color my half of our trade, too... he's a wolf-guy - I hope I did him justice! He's done in a somewhat iconographic, formal "hieratic" (from the Greek word for "sacred") style, as is seen in Byzantine art. His costume is based off of the intricate one Anna did in her pic of Jasper (he's supposed to be black-furred but I'm still struggling with Photoshop 6).
| Image: syn-TomIndy.jpg
477x610 62957 bytes 2001.04.24
Tom "Indy" VonWallenrod! Per his description, he's a "rather buff wolf anthro", his Indiana-Jones-type attire somewhat the worse for wear, his fedora in his hand, and holding aloft some artifact... pencil sketch & I colored it in Pshop6 at lunch (notice a pattern here?)
| Image: syn-darkdrgn.jpg
343x540 105263 bytes 2001.04.20
Dark Dragoness! This is Psycrowe's magnificent Dragoness character - her Furry (and other) dragons are simply incredible, but I'm sure you know that already! DD's copyright to Adelle Crowe AKA Psycrowe. Hope I did her justice! Another one I forgot to upload....
| Image: syn-neogeen.jpg
383x600 116800 bytes 2001.04.20
NeoGeen! Kim Kopskamp's very unique character (and copyright to her!) Here she is as a quadruped (based off of her pic neo3.jpg). I did this a while ago, but forgot to upload it here... maybe someday I'll color it, too...
| Image: syn-SunCat.jpg
447x450 59437 bytes 2001.04.17
On a trip to Arizona in '97, I visited a lot of museums and was inspired by the beautiful, highly symbolic Hopi Kachina (or Katsina) dolls. I planned and sketched a whole series of animals based on these figures, but I never got around to completing them (though I still hope to do so, perhaps for a portfolio someday) - but when I was looking for something to color for practice, I stumbled across this sketch. So far it's been the only thing I've colored completely with a tablet - all images colored before and after it were done with a mouse. Tawa is the Sun Kachina, and his face seemed somewhat feline to me, so I made him a cougar.
| Image: syn-4rstr.jpg
387x450 88965 bytes 2001.04.14
Four Stories: 1995, ink. Part of a promotional piece, demonstrating different rendering techniques - clockwise from top left: realistic, stone, fantasy, and graphic. Micron pen.
| Image: syn-Blackfrostclr.jpg
466x600 87073 bytes 2001.04.14
Blackfrost! Out of the blue, Julie Wondra sent me magnificent pics of Synnabar Hellcat - so I did this in return. I was trying out Photoshop 6, and I got a little carried away! (She's supposed to have black fur, not brown).
| |
| Image: syn-Auroraclr.jpg
528x450 46564 bytes 2001.04.14
Aurora! My half of an art trade with Michele Sheikh. Check her out here at the VCL! Since Aurora's a unicorn and not a "real" horse, I had fun with anatomy. (Boy, it's been AGES since my "unicorn phase" - yes, I went through a unicorn / winged horse phase as a kid, too). Photoshop 6 & pencil.
