Chance's kata
This was a pen doodle of a character no longer in existence, but it was kinda nifty, and seeing as I'm uploading all the stuff I drew in class, and I did this almost eight months ago...it goes here!
I'd like to think that one can see elements of personality or style in even this brief passage. I was trying to put together a slightly eccentric style (a lunging block!? Back kick into gainer flash kick!?) as it kinda embodies the character- oddball and somewhat unpredictable.

Oh god, another "jpg conversion killed my scan" pic.
Having *just* finished exams, it suddenly struck me that I hadn't drawn Arael for a long time. Since last year, really. So I simply had to do this.
As always, there's a story behind the pic. This pose: "Arael about to fly-kick Rael in the face," is one I draw about once a year. That is, I'd draw it and then my mother would bust me for drawing when I was supposed to be studying. The pic would subsequently be confiscated and I would have no clue where it went. I suspect it is stashed somewhere that I couldn't be bothered to look.
P.S. Manga style backgrounds totally pwn my sorry ass. Now I know why the major artists employ juniors to do their dirty work for them. This is a draft.

Been a while, again. Just much, much too busy to get anything much done, apart from a few scribbles here and there (check the journal in a month, maybe).
A more successful attempt at doing something in ink. This time, I tried to lighten up and have at it with a bit more speed, using a leaky black uniball and a scratchy signo gel pen. Actually I was hoping for a Watterson feel (Calvin and Hobbes) but then a) I'm not good with that, and b) I'd need a different kind of pen, and paper.
So here's Morgan, looking downcast. You might wonder what's with all the extraneous blank space. Well- it's framing. A whole lot of nothing and everything weighing down on his shoulders.

Epiphany
Too much explanation required! Points in a quick list:
* Based on a commission brief written by my partner Strawcat.
* I owed him the very same picture since 27 months ago but wasn't good enough to do it then.
* Upon rereading the brief, I pounced on it and slaved over it in OC over the new year as I was ill.
* I don't have a tablet. I wish I had a tablet as drawing with the mouse drives me nuts.
* This is the low quality version. I might make prints of the full quality version but the filesize is massive.
Epiphany (the character) belongs to Strawcat. My sig is in the bottom right.

Well, seeing as I drew a shark...man thingy, I thought I might as well do a shark...girl to go with it :P Despite my dislike of using sexual archetypes to the exclusion of variances, I don't think I'll bother going past the simple male/female forms, as this was more an exercise than anything else.
I managed to scare some people with the 'roids overdose guy, and I think while this girl may appear slightly less intimidating, she is still a little creepy.
The morphology of sharks and the like really don't lend themselves to anthropomorphisation.

Finally, another pic of the Alaskan_hound. Riding a wild lookin' cruiser thingy. Actually it's kinda like a mutated cross between Kanaeda's bike from Akira and a Honda Rune. It has a sweet 8 cyl 400kw engine with...ok better stop before I start. I have half a mind to take the armoured casing off the exhausts and show them like they should be: flared. Alaskan_hound is actually wearing his jacket (as opposed to going topless) and he's carrying his modified 21E 7.62mm (VERY heavily modified). And again I had to annotate the pic because that's me.
As usual, done with pencils...(why do I bother telling you that)

Stryer's Biochemistry 5th Edition: OMFG not for 1st year med students...
*head asplode*
That pretty much sums up my experience with biochemistry. I'm going to stick to lecture notes for the time being, and see if I don't fail my semesterly exams too...
That said, it's been a while since I found time to do any colouring the way I like it (pastels, pen.) I was relatively happy with this one- it even scanned not-too-badly. You'll almost never find a picture like this: Rael, being the rampant misanthrope, doesn't like associating with human activity, so he wouldn't be wearing glasses or reading biochem...but I just had to draw this because it popped into my head and struck me as funny. I ripped the style of the mushroom cloud from Watterson again.

An administrative bungle on my end means that I'm uploading this for the THIRD time now ^^; Also the levels have been upped so it looks a bit white but then that's because I'm using a laptop.
This is the 4th in line of "keep Dong sane during 4th semester exam period" pics. However, this one while still a ballpoint effort, exceeded its bounds as a scribble- unlike the other three (the first of which is in the sketches folder). I spent exorbitant amounts of time on it (in the context of having an exam today...that'd be 2 hours plus).
I won't say exactly where I ganked the pose from (it's generic, like the rest of the character), but let's just say the addition of denim hot pants are a damn sight more "wholesome" than the original image. Not that I'm complaining, mind you.

This is the result of ruminating on how to draw slim avian types. I find of all anthropomorphic types to adapt, they'd have to be among the trickiest. Strawcat said that he couldn't be bothered thinking about it, so I gave it a shot. This was originally a ballpoint sketch, then I took the airbrush tool out...
20 hours later, this results. I was trying to work on lighting but it appears that laptop screens give far more luminescence than this...other one I'm using now.
I shall do a proper pic of Hugin later. He comes from the Norse mythology but might be involved in a story with Orlestat or something.

Even if the original CS is 'offially' dead with the release of CS Source, there are still those players from the underground that remain loyal to the good ol' ver. 1.6. It just so happens that The Bunnygirl is abit of an online geek, just like your average person. Hence she uses a net-persona: hunny_bunny. And she likes CS. Of course, the pic looks really stupid, since there's no way that a skin like that would ever be used for CS, but what the hell. She's even got a stupid spray logo to go with it. Note that the head still needs alot of work...but I don't really want to move towards a more realistic rabbit-head though.

More of the bunnygirl, still showing her panties, and still wearing that strange strange half-halter top half-shirt. Hence she is 'always dressed sensibly.' For a trip to the gynaecologist perhaps. Bully for every other heterosexual male (and homosexual female) around. Nonetheless, her head is still weird. I can only get better at it. I hope.

Lift Your Head and Wonder
This is a doodle I did as part of "let's not do anything for NaNoWriMo day". I managed to create and characterise an entirely new...character in the space of three sketches! This is the third and despite not having all the relevant details (including wrinkles and some of the clothing), I liked it.
Jack will have to be a sufficient name for him: he's a neutral medic trapped on a war-locked world in my novel project "Anthropometry"- so his role is something like Medicins Sans Frontièrs (if that's the right spelling). He's getting old and starting to think what he's done with his life and how long he'll last.

I call it a macroped :P (see LJ 28-02-05 for an explanation)
Have you ever seen those plush-toys with ridiculously huge legs? Like, larger than their entire body, irrespective of species? Ye, well, I thought I had like a +20 resistance to cute things like Pikachu and all that, but when I saw these, it was like 'awwww kawaiiiiiii.' So I did this at 2 in the morning. I was *trying* to 'realise' the plush toy by firming up the physical attributes (not that much can be done with stitches, cloth and stuffing), but at the same time kept some of the stich markings.
Technically this is a cutesy version of Aeryn (unicorn), but somehow she gained fetlocks, and I can't tell whether this is a filly or colt. Now that's out of my system, I think I'll do some more XD

Another macroped. Or rather, the same macroped. Unfortunately I messed up somewhat and made the legs too thin...it ain't a macroped if the legs don't occupy about 15 times the volume than the rest of it does. I also started struggling when finishing the background, coz it started smudging (I'm unco) and the H-tinted pastels tend to streak instead of blend. Overall I'd say it turned out pretty alrite- the colours balanced out and the new (for me) technique is off to a good start: the grass is actually done first by an underlayer of blended hues in pastel, then detailed on with studios. And I'm rather fond of my fountain pen.

Another cutesy pic- I'm in this phase, partially due to my brother I guess. Also, this was the only thing I had time to do during my brief trip to Melbourne (bloody college applications).
As you can see, it's the macroped. Again. This time she's slightly wet, and off-balance trying to walk across the sleet.
When doing the pine trees (ignore the one on the right, that was a total fuck-up) and the clouds, I learnt the value of the WHITE pastel pencil. How could I be so ignorant?
Oh well nuts to that- methinks I shall go and learn CG- and get me a Wacom tablet :P

Blah blah blah more crappy lineart with lots of dry verbage... But not to fear! I'm coming to the end of my old (and finished ) stuff, which you would notice is markedly worse than my NEW stuff (practise makes perfect as they say.)
The idea with Raine (the little baby dragon as shown here) is that he's a thought-experiment. Some kind of self-run hypothetical situation to do with the question of what defines a life. Because Raine has no physical senses- so what does he have? And how is it possible then that he can be breastfed?
More on this later.

When I first drew this back in September, I really wanted to upload it- but due to its personal nature, I felt I shouldn't, or rather, couldn't. Since then however, <a href="http://www.livejournal.com/users/botcat/71865.html">changes in circumstances</a> have encouraged me to put this up for sake of completeness. It's only a quick 10 minute sketch, done with a lowly Pentel Sharplet-2 (0.5, 2B led with a few brushes of Mars-Lumograph 3B: see tail and Morgan's arm). But it's one of those few sketches I put out quickly that a) look easy and spontaeneous because it actually is, b) fits just right without having to rejig the composition six times, c) captures a mood I was after so well. Hence I called it 'moment.'

*sigh* more black and white crap I hear you say. Do not despair! I have moved on to a productive period of colors! Besides, this was done in May, 2004, which was ages ago. I still got about 50 old 2004 images to upload!
A quick pic I did when feeling a little down, the HSC (final school examinations) being what it is. I should have been studying, but then again even if I don't have time to do this stuff, I make the time, usually at around 2 am in the morning. Oh well the exams are over, everybody's happy so I don't mind if I felt like shit before. And I got some nice pics out of it. I liked the wings in this one. They're the hardest part to get, and the curve was just so it framed the head...fluke. And the foot looks funny.

Morgan's Jockstrap
I don't know why I didn't upload this before!
Done late last year, in scratchy pen in my scrapbook. I basically set out to do one of the *gayest* pictures I could possibly think of, and this is about it. Please, do note all the details, such as the things hanging on the line.
The background is in fact the view from my apartment window. However, due to the perspective, this looks like the 9th floor as opposed to the 6th. Either way, I just wanted to say it's a real purdy view, and yes, the clouds can even look like that in the morning.
I, however, wouldn't dream of hanging my clothes on the line at six in the morning wearing nothing but a jockstrap. I don't even own a jockstrap. Though it might solve the problem of tails...

Now coloured in and some basic tricks and stuff. Went over the pacer with the pastels and black uni-ball pen. At first, I had absolutley no idea what I was doing with the shades so I ended up using some that I didn't want, and then ended up reworking layer after layer about 5 times. After all that, I didn't want to make it look that construed, and besides, I was in a hurry, so I scribbled up a quick background and did a layer combine, followed by an 'apply canvas' script from the GIMP. *cheers for the GIMP*
The background apparently adds a feminine quality that was lost when I first finished the coloring job. I would post the version without the background, but then I guess that's being overindulgent.

The quickest sketch I've done for a while...took me no more than 3 minutes! I do prefer it when I do something spontaeneously, as opposed to planning something for friggen ages and having it lacking the energy or living quality to it. So this turned out pretty alright. I thought that there was a certain element of femininity in it, although when coloured in, people tended to disagree. Still, this is the preliminary sketch, in itself a finished product.

Updated Morgan reference (lineart)
Upon meeting an equine-loving friend on Friday, I was reminded that I have not done many drawings of Morgan for a long time. So while taking a break today, I shot out two quick sketches, because in that time, I couldn't really do any of the stuff that I *owe* other people, heh.
Besides, Morgan is totally cute. You may note that his musculature and structure has changed to being less spindly- this is because my own body structure has significantly changed due to more intense training. But Morgan still has more on the pecs and biceps than I do, and always will, since by comparison our basic structures differ.
I'll color this in OC later, probably after I finish everything else.

His figure shimmers through the sweltering heat...Morgan in his rather 'un-natural' home habitat: the desert. He's from the desert sector of the shadow people, and with that comes a whole new set of circumstances. Which I shall explain in yet another text document.
Actually I recoloured the reference sheet with pastels and put it through photoshop. This is as close as I can get to Morgan's colouration as a 'half-changeling.' Note the stockinged forelimbs (I got a thing for those :P). Also note that I'm a stickler for anatomical correctness, but it doesn't quite qualify as yiff. Should I make him wear something though?

Now Morgan's standing in the forest, and the shimmering is replaced by a dappling effect thanks to canopy cover and the resulting shadows.
Note he has the most gorgeous blue eyes (that I have to draw better) and a white diamond-shaped blaze on his forehead. Of course that then contravenes the fact he's meant to have black stockinged forelimbs, but meh. I also realised that he's abnormally tall, especially around the legs, thanks to the entire lower limb part. It looked ok on Aeryn, but on Morgan, who isn't a short-arse, well...Also note (for the 3rd time in as many uploads) that he doesn't have any 'loose fur' esp around hooves. I said I was a stickler for anatomical detail- and I STILL suck at drawing horse heads. And shoulders. And everything else.

Modern Nes
So I was like, bored, and should've been studying but wasn't, and I decided to play around with OC and gimp again. So I grabbed an extract from a previous self-exorcism attempt and bam!
I was attempting someting a little street-artish or what have you, and yes, I know Nes is missing eyes, I also did that on purpose.
What else...I don't like how the pants turned out. I wanted denim, I got polyester. Damnit! I should have turned down the environment and effect to increase the contrast, but when zoomed way in, things *do* look rather different. But meh, he can have polyester pants.

Nes' ginga
This is Nes again. Practicing his ginga.
The ginga (or jinga) provides the basis of Capoeira, both in terms of footwork and rhythm. It looks unstable but is in fact very balanced, and the center of gravity is low. The hands are always ready to guard the face.
Note here that Nes' ginga is unusually quick, and his hand movements a little jerky- I've tried to modify it to reflect his 'rabbitness'.
Drawn by mouse using PAP 4.0 (free version). I'll be doing more of these as I may be developing a game later, and this will form part of a pilot version/alpha. The real version would assumedly be done using 3D models.
THAT'S RITE. MOAR FURRY GAMEZ! In like ten years.
Neske İ strop
And on that note, I'm now signing my work either strop or dong. They're both me.

L-freeze!
So I've finally figured out most of the basic details of the coloration and the costuming. I had trouble figuring out what color I should use, so I asked my mate and he suggested this. Halfway through I was reminded of a HEV suit from HL.
On the shoulder is a silver rabbit brooch backed by a brass ring- that's probably a personal effect more than an indicator of his skill level like I said I wanted to have earlier. Anyway.
Also, since Nes (that's his name now) doesn't do breakdance per se, he's not doing an L-freeze but that's the closest label I can think of so there you go.

100% Open Canvas, quick sketch. I'm trying to find my old style on the new tablet, but this is hampered by limited space and the inability to do my natural strokes.
This is, however, the style I may settle for when doing comic art.
The really poor Japanes calligraphy comes from a 9th century Zen saying. Translated, it reads "Go and drink some tea!" Interpreted, it is an invitation to reflect and discover yourself. I found it pretty apt for the subject.
