Happy Year of the Dragon!

\r\nTiny dragoness or really, really big fortune cookie?\r\n\r\nI know this is a few days late, but ah well. Happy year of the dragon! May this year be a good one for you.\r\n\r\nI also realize that fortune cookies aren't authentic Chinese, but it really fits the picture I think. Though now I feel the need to go to Panda Express for some orange chicken, chow mein and crab cheese. Mmmm.

Image: FemaleNiray-watermarked.jpg   619x800 147814 bytes 2012.01.18

The natives of the water planet, Nirayuskwar. They are amphibious and can live either in or out of water indefinitely... but MUCH prefer being in water to the point where most of them don't like leaving their homeworld.\r\n\r\nThis female is likely a city guard. Her full back display is opened, which is rare... as usually a Niray's back display is used only for attracting a potential suitor or deterring would-be predators. The spines of the tips of the back display do contain a venom that is toxic to most other sentiants, so Niray who have regular interaction with offworlders will often get the tips removed.\r\n\r\n\r\nTheir appearance is but a whisper of that of the earth species they evolved from... but the back display should give a little hint.

Long Dragon Is Long...

My hubby gave me Skyrim for Christmas, so I pretty much had to push myself to get off the game and do some art stuffs.\r\n\r\nThis was originally going to be my "year of the dragon" picture, but I've decided against that... I'm going to do something else for it.\r\n\r\n

The Recordkeepers

This may not look like it, but this is actually a first pass drawing for my Denaq species. Usually my first pass drawings are nothing more then sketches and aren't nearly as "completed" as this, but I've already had the specific look for this species in my head.\r\nDenaq hail from the grassland planet, Aw'vor, and are generally regarded as being the "librarians" or "recordkeepers" of the Azure Wheel Universe as they tend to be very scholarly.\r\n\r\nThe female is standard black colored while the male is an color mutation. About 10% of Denaq have either white hair or white bodies. Completely white Denaq are very uncommon. The clothing shown here isn't 100% acurate.

Intrepid - Promotion

Promotional picture to go along with the beautiful soundtrack that FoxAmoore did for my upcoming comic. \r\n\r\n\r\nThe comic itself isn't coming out until next Summer, but I've been doing a lot of progress to the universe, characters, and story which can be found on my Tumblr account.\r\nIf you like seeing sketches, WIPs, and thought processed, have at it.\r\n\r\nThough my comic mostly has human (looking) characters, it really is a furry-friendly universe as most sentient species have evolved from Earth species. I tried to illustrate some of the more anthro species here. (Inari is an animal, not a furry... but still. The other two could be considered "furries").\r\n\r\n\r\nLOL... to be honest, I kinda threw this picture together at last minute. But I still like it.

Deep in their Studies

Two young Ibirians study hard to gain their status as priestess.\r\n\r\nMore reference material for the Ibirian species. This one is mostly meant to illustrate their homeworld... in particular, the grasslands outside of the Temple of The Sun.\r\n\r\nOf course, Ibirius has more topographical features then this... but the entire planet does have a pastel color palatte with an almost shimmery feel to it.\r\n\r\nAlso illustrated are two tree species only found on Ibirius. Both of these plants were on the planet before the human settlers and are therefore not related to any earth species.\r\n\r\nThe Abakus plant has long, thin leaves and flowering fruit while the indar plant has pointed leaves and a pomegranite like fruit that grows along the long trunk.\r\n\r\n

Of Science and Spirituality

\r\n\r\nThe Azure Wheel Galaxy is divided 50/50 between the scientific side and the spiritual side. The two sides coexist peacefully, and neither could survive without the other.\r\n\r\n-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-\r\nIn my Intrepid story, Liah represents the spiritual side of the galaxy while Shae represents the scientific. The two share an unbreakable bond of friendship, symbolizing the unity of the two sides of the universe.\r\n\r\nTheir relationship is "complicated" to say the least. Shae has deep romantic feelings for her, but Liah sees them as being kindred spirits rather then potential lovers. Both Liah and Shae are in relationships with other people.\r\n

Perroquet Series - Sun Conure

This is a bird trade that I did with Mazz, who told me she wanted a sun conure. I decided to incoperate it into my perroquet series, because it really fit the theme and I was hard up for ideas for the series. :p\r\n\r\nShe has a Mesoamerican flair, though she isn't based off of any specific cultures because suns seem to have a broad range in Central and South America, so I couldn't just pinpoint them to one speific culture. Anyone who knows me knows that I've studied Mesoamerican culture for several years in college and I'm in love with it!\r\n\r\nI love suns, but boy are they hard to color. I can never get overly saturated colors to look good.

Emotion and Devotion

Yah... I was actually supposed to be studying for my French test on Monday, but ended up doing this instead. Yay procrastination! Go me!\r\n\r\nI may not draw porn and adult scenes... but I am a bit of a romantic and do enjoy drawing sensuality and love scenes... especially then the two involved are deeply in love like Shae and Estdra here.\r\n\r\nI mainly did this picture because I wanted to get Shae's girlfriend out on paper. And it was also good practice for more complex backgrounds... and friggity frack did that background take forever! In any case, I'm pleased that I actually got a good bit of the Ultimarian homeworld in the background so the world can now see what I've had in my head.

Autumn Shaman

\r\n\r\nI really don't have anything extensive to say about this picture. I felt the need to draw a hippogryph because I don't remember the last time I've drawn one. The autumn background was also done because I don't do them very often. >_<\r\n\r\nThis picture used three sheets of paper. I didn't document the time that I worked on it, but I estimate it to have taken about 5-6 hours from start to finish. Soundtrack for working on this was Depeche Mode and the Phantom of the Opera soundtrack.

The Dice Are Trying To Kill Me...

This picture was originally a ten minute sketch that I did in my sketchbook and was not meant to see the light of day. The title was a quote from a T-shirt that John, my best friend has.\r\n\r\nI love Shae! He's my resident space nerd!\r\n\r\nHe likes to play table-top roleplaying games, so I imagined what a D&D type game in their universe would look like. Basically it includes a holographic board and "intelligent" dice.\r\n\r\nI'm in the middle of giving all of my human characters a much needed overhaul. I've been ignoring them for years, giving my "furry" characters all the attention. My heart isn't into making furry art like it used to, so I'd really like to focus my attention into my science fiction characters/story.

Liah And Nimbus - Concept Art

Quick Concept Art.\r\n\r\nSome of my watchers will recognize Liah, but her companion is probably completely unknown.\r\n\r\nNimbus is a cobyth (or Grand Imperial Dragon as some in the Azure Wheel Universe like to call them). Cobyths are draconic in appearance, but are just as much dragons as platypus are ducks. Cobyth actually evolved from an archaeopteryx type creature.\r\n\r\nLiah rescued Nimbus when he was just a pup. His wing was badly injured and part of it had to be amputated (Not shown here in this picture, obviously). A cobyth who cannot fly usually cannot live a normal life, but Liah gave him a purpose. He now acts as a transport, carrying Liah or the other crew members swiftly across rough terrain or battlefields.\r\n

The Druidess and Her Guardian

Brain! Y U NO think of better titles?!\r\n\r\nAnyways, a personal piece I did to take a break from calender commissions. As I've stated in previous pieces, I've wanted to branch a little more away from anthro art and start doing more high fantasy and sci-fi work to sell prints of at art shows and what not. I am in love with this dragon's face, who is t-rex based, obviously. I don't draw enough dino inspired dragons! :p\r\n\r\nI've been working on this off and on since yesterday. I'd actually like to make a series out of druid girls with mythological beast guardians. I might do that when I'm done with my current "to-do" list.

The Summoning

\r\nThe resulting picture of my "Lets Build a Picture" Polls. The winning poll results were Phoenix, Dragon, Ruins, Blue/Black and Magic".\r\n\r\nI love phoenix. They're my third favorite mythical beasts... right after gryphons (duh!) and ki'rins. I'm glad one of the winning results was phoenix. :p\r\n\r\nIf your curious, the poll options with the least amount of votes were lion, red panda, yellow/white, meadow and foreign lands. No, I will not be doing that picture... if anything because yellow and white are my two all time LEAST favorite colors to work with and I think they look like a butt sandwich together. >_<

Zebra: The other, other, OTHER white meat!\r\nZebra: It's whats for dinner!\r\n\r\nA bit of personal art that I've done while waiting for others to get back to me about art that I owe them. This is me getting slightly out of my "comfort zone" since this type of pose is very difficult for me to draw.\r\n\r\nCredits:\r\nClothing texture by Trippy-CS\r\nGrunge texture for the sky by NinStock\r\nGrass tutorial by megaphones

Nightsister Gryphon

Even though this species was inspired by the Star Wars Universe, it is not "Canon". It was a species I made up for the "Fictional Gryphon Contest" at GryphonArtistsUnited. Basically the contest is about imagining how gryphons would be in different books/movies/whatever.\r\n \r\nI went for a Star Wars inspired gryphon, because the hubby and I are both big fans of Star Wars. It is more based on the expanded universe rather then the movies. I also took some time in thinking about how a gryphon-ish species would come about in such a universe, since magical cat/bird hybrids probably wouldn't make a lot of sense. \r\n\r\nPlus I didn't want them to be cute and cuddly as cute critters are the first to be eaten on a planet like Dathomir.\r\n

Xicohtencoatl - Character Concept

Concept art for my new Quetzalcoatl based naga character, Xicohtencoatl. Her backstory needs to be refined, but this is more or less the final design for her appearance. She is meant to be a character that is not derived from my fictional universe OR any other existing works, but rather an actual world mythology. I studied Mesoamerican culture for two years in my college days, so Aztec mythology was a natural choice for me.

Jungle Vindicator

I spent a few days last week with a high fever. During that time I spent most of the time playing Gauntlet: Dark Legacy. It's an old game, but still one of my favorites. \r\n\r\nThe forest realm in that game is not one of my favorites to actually play through since the levels are long and difficult... but they are one of my favorites to look at. I particularly like the Acid Swamp level, since the mix between Mayan and Polynesian decor is visually interesting.\r\n\r\nThat's where this gal comes in. The lizardmen generals in the game wear helmets that look like Triceratops skulls. It reminded me that I've never actually attempted to draw a triceratops before. \r\n

The Storm Lord

This picture originally started as a quick sketch that I was doing while watching Nostolgia Critic reviews. Those that really know me knows that I can't just sit and watch TV/Movies/Videos/Whatever without drawing because I need to keep my mind busy. \r\n\r\nIt's more or less my take on a traditional chinese dragon done in a similar style to several dragon pictures I did around the 2006-07 time period.\r\n\r\nI decided to color him to give me something to do while waiting for a few clients to get back on me about their commissions. Once again, I tried a more limited color palatte with this picture. I am mostly happy with the results.\r\n\r\n

Happy Year of the Rabbit!

I've been working on this on and off between smaller pieces of art to kick in the Chinese New Year. \r\n\r\nThis being the year of the rabbit has given me an excuse to draw a rabbit. I really do love bunnehs but I rarely get a chance to draw them.

Image: Gilded-Watermarked.jpg   800x619 144461 bytes 2011.01.21

This feels like it's the first real piece of personal art I've done in a while. I've been wanting to incorporate a wider variety of subject matter into my personal art so I will have a broader range of things for my professional portfolio and art shows rather then having nothing but anthros. \r\n\r\nI don't draw humans (or in this case, elves) very often, but I do enjoy drawing them. The dragon was added for more scaling practice.\r\n\r\n

Adept of Sekhmet

A personal piece done because I needed one more picture for my art book to even out the page numbers.\r\n\r\nThis picture began as my interpritation of the goddess Sekhmet, but ended up deviating way off course from my original idea.\r\nThe name of this picture... and general appearance of this character is based off of one of my characters for DCU-Online Beta. \r\n\r\nRandom glowy things are fun!\r\n\r\nArcane Circle brushes from redheadstock\r\n

Image: TigerDrake-watermarked.jpg   619x800 154416 bytes 2010.12.03

Piece done for fun... and to have more material for my upcoming annual artbook.\r\n\r\nInspiration comes in all shapes and forms. This was started when I was watching the episode of Futurama where the crew of Planet Express found themselves on the planet of giant Amazon women (one of my favorite episodes, BTW). One of the women was wearing an outfit that I'd always liked so I wanted to try drawing an anthro in a similar outfit.\r\n\r\nThe tiger striped dragon idea... well, I've always liked dragons with markings inspired by big cats, so a tiger striped dragoness was a natural choice.\r\n\r\nShe does have a name... Takura Suntail.\r\nI don't know if I'll be drawing her again or not... I just like designing characters.

Image: BlackAndWhite-Watermarked.jpg   619x800 157236 bytes 2010.11.16

Black and White

This is a good example of me procrastinating. Trying to work on things that I should be working on has been like swimming upstream through a river of molasses. :/\r\n\r\nI've also been trying to force myself out of a rather nasty art block by sitting on the couch with a piece of paper while watching my TV shows and drawing whatever comes to mind at the moment. Most of said ideas end up getting scrapped, but sometimes I come up with something fun that I want to color.\r\n\r\nThat's where these two mares come in.\r\nSo, just a quick picture done for fun. \r\n\r\nNow... back to working on the things I should be.\r\n

Ritual of the Forest Lord

Personal pic done for fun while waiting for a few clients to getback to me about their commissioned pics. \r\n\r\nForestmute is one of the five gryphon lords in the religion of the land the main bulk of my stories take place in. He is a supernatural being, but he is not a god. Think of him more as a kami, or spirit like those found in the Shinto religion... or if you'd be more familiar with a pop culture reference, think of him as a gryphonic version of the forest spirit from the movie Princess Mononoke.\r\nHis true form is actually pure energy, but he manifests himself into the gryphon form shown in the picture to interact with mortals.\r\n\r\nHe serves all the nine gods of Thera, but is most closely tied to Iris, the goddess of nature.

Keeper of the Dead Forest

This little gargoyle dragon started out very... uninspired.\r\nI didn't feel like working on commissions, so I tried to procrastinate but had a severe art block. After some sketching, I came up with this little guy.\r\n\r\nI thought he was kind of cute, so I colored him. I'm glad that I did. \r\n\r\nHappy Halloween!\r\n\r\n

Image: DesertWarrior-Watermarked.jpg   619x800 130058 bytes 2010.10.14

Desert Warrior

Those of you who pay attention to my scraps either on dA or Furaffinity have seen the line art for this one. I uploaded it over a month ago, but finally decided to take a break from commissions to finish it.\r\n\r\nA fennec fox breed Theran tests her might against one of these giant predators. Hard to say who has the upper hand since both are fully equipped for desert combat. \r\n\r\nI do adore fennecs, but a lot of the time when I see artists draw fennecs... they just don't look like fennecs to me. I wanted to try drawing my own since it's been a while since I've tried drawing one.\r\n\r\n
